Cardiac Output
Amount of blood pumped per minute
Normal is around 5L/minute or 5000 ml/min |
What Affects Heart Rate?
Autonomic nervous system
Sympathetic increases heart rate - + chronotropic effect Parasympathetic decreases heart rate - - chronotropic effect Adrenal medulla secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine which increases heart rate |
Factors Affecting Cardiac Output
Cardiac output will be changed by adjusting heart rate or stroke volume
Heart rate affected by autonomic nervous system and hormones Stroke volume is affected by by cahnging EDV, ESV or both |
Factors Affecting Stroke Volume
Peripheral resistance - if peripheral resistance is increases, less blood is pumped out so larger ESV and smaller stroke volume
Contractility of the heart - Less contractility, less blood pumped out, so larger ESV and smaller stroke volume Venous return - Increased venous return leads to an increased EDV and increased stroke volume |
