Seriation
The artifical ordering of artifacts 'into seris" and based on shared similarities. artifacts that are similar are close in time.Useful when there is no info on the context.
Stylistic Seriation
Seris are organized by using the "style" of the artifact.
Frequency Seriations
Based on the changes in the proportion of artifacts
Sequence Comparison
We estimate the age of the artifact by comparison
Geological and Geochemical Age determination
Similar to Stratigraphy. The age of the cultural materials is assessed by association with old geological deposits
Varve Accumulation
Useful for areas with ancient glacial lakes. There is a constant accumulation of varves (layers of outwash) in glacial lakes. produced by retarting ice sheets
Obsidian hydration
Based on the obsidian's absorption of water at a constant rate. the thickness of the hydration layer serves to calculate the period in which the artifact was made.
Faunal and floral deterimination
Diagnostic species are used to date specific time periods. provides info in the nature of the enviroment.
Dendrochronology
The number of rings in the tree determine the age of the tree
Bone age determination
Bone remains from the same context will lose organic components. two bone remains from different context will have different amounts of flurine and uranium
radiocarbon determination
C14 decays into N14 at a constant rate. By measuring the amount of C14 still left we can calculate when the organisim died.
