Charles Andrew
principle of African Free School school in 1809. Parents did not like that he pushed his colonizations views on the kids in the school. he scolded a child for calling a black man a gentleman so the black community began to detest(dislike) him. and boycotted the school. Parents start created black public school for their own children. wanted control of their kids academics and religions.
Mark Delany
Wrote for the North Starr (1847) He developed an immigration platform to go back to Africa. He had different ideas than Douglass did not trust whites. Delany wanted blacks to be educated academically and economically (business wise)
Native Schools
Are operated by ex slaves. Freedman's bureau helped the schools move forward. Freeman's Bureau's came into existence in 1865.
General Samuel Armstong
Founder of Hampton Institute est. 1868; The Hampton Model of Education. Armstrong appealed to blacks but still adhered to white ideology. MAKE THE TEACHERS AND YOU MAKE STUDENTS. (be a hard worker and the best cook you can be)
Booker T. Washington
Founder of Tuskegee normal and industrial institute. He embodied the Hampton Model. He became the black face for the industrial institute. "Caste down your buckets where you are"
Anna Julia Cooper
4th African American to receive PhD. Born in 1858 (slavery) Taught at M Street School in DC. She opposed industrial education as the dominant or only education at her school. She tried to blend classical and practice education which lead to her being fired.
W.E.B. Du Bois
Born 1868. 1st African to receive a PHD from Harvard. He was open to the idea of industrial education but did not want it to be the only model. He believed in the Talented 10th. Tuskegee/Hampton model locked americans into 2nd class citizenship. Opposed to black mass exodus
Nannie Helen Burroughs
National Training School for women & girls est. 1909 in D.C. educated black women from 15 to the adulthood. Allowed them to be individual women, gain manners, and have moral values. Funds from her school were from the National Baptist Convention. Believed "Bible, Bath, Broom"
Arturo Schomburg
immigrated to NY from Puerto Rico in 1891. He was a historian, writer and activist. He felt African Americans needed to obtain knowledge about their race. He believed blacks had to restore their historical grounding through history and culture.
Carter G Woodson
Priority was to gain support for black education. Published textbooks that catered to black students and advocated for a transformation of curricula used to teach black students. 1920 he developed his own publishing company. He gave out magazines for free to spread African. Am. history to the world. Created Negro History week in 1926.
Atlantic Compromise 1895
A speech by Booker T. Washington. "cast down your buckets down where you stand." Social justice is a gradual process. Whites loved him (The Education of Blacks in the South, 1860-1935)
Ida B. Wells
She documented the anti-lynching Campaign. She was a founder of the NAACP but did not get credit for it from DuBois
Elijah Mars
Enlisted into the colored troops in the Civil War. He helped get funded from the Union Army to help teach. He went back to his community after the war and taught blacks how to read and write. (Self-Taught)
General Education Board 1902
Created by John D. Rockefeller. It was a monopolistic control over lack education as it related to funding. Majority funding for black schools.
The Second Morrill Act (1890)
Legislation that gave land grant to 17 black schools
Julius Rosenwald Fund (1913)
Grants for the construction of black schools (Hampton/Tuskegee Model)
The Slater Fund
Trained teachers for the south. 1 Million dollar fund.
The Niagara Movement (1905)
seeking rights for Blacks. The floor runner for the NAACP and it was opposition of the Hampton Model.

Ruling introduces the legal doctrine of "separate but equal"
The Great Migration 1st Wave (1910-1930)
Black people moving North. Seeking jobs & economic stability. Race Riots= The reflection of the New Negro. Not speaking for the Negro but as a Negro. The development of the Militancy is an important aspect of the New Negro.
Freedman Bureau
March 1865 to 1872, bureau of refugees created to help freed slaves with education to help establish economic stability and schools. Helped freed slaves in the South for one year in the transition from slavery to freedom. Assisted ex slaves in the South. Gave clothes, food and gave legal help. Created by Congress.
