Africa's Geography

desert, savanna, coasts, rivers, and rain forests.

slash and burn was thought to help the area by cutting everything down and burning it but in reality the land just losses its fertility.

Hot, wet, and humid... also had tetse flys that would give u the sleeping sickness if you got bit. (not well populated)

mostly gold and salt, salt worth its weight in gold. salt prevented dehydration, mostly in the sahara desert but not in the savannas. (who ever controlled trade had the power).

Muslim merchants brought Islam to Ghana.

Mali kingdom

Sundiata is the only survivor. Took control of gold and salt trade. Sundiata founded Mali.

King Mensa Musa achievements

Expanded Mali's boarders and ensured peace. Converted to Islam. Went to Hajj to create ties with Muslim empire. Timbuktu emerged as center of trade and education.

Songhai kingdom founder

Founder king Sunni Ali. Followed traditional religious practices.

Bein Kingdom

Traded pepper, ivory, and slaves. Obu (king) was religious and political leader. They were known for bronze and brass sculptures.

Easter African Kingdoms

Kush, and Axum.

Kush kingdom

South of Egypt Nubia. Adopted much Egyptian culture. Developed a trade empire with Rome and India. (Eastern Kingdom)

Axum

Present day Ethiopia. First and only Christian kingdom in Africa. Beneficial at first because it creates trade ties with Mediterranean sea.640 AD Arabs and Islam came and surrounded so they became isolated. (Eastern kingdom).

Established Muslim Dynasty. West African kingdoms split into small kingdoms

South African kingdoms

Bantu, and Great Zimabwe.

Bantu kingdom

Africans that share same language and culture. migrated south then east spreading culture.

Swahili

Arabic blend with Bantu language.

Great Zimbabwe

Strategic location, between inland gold trade and coastal cites. later control trade >> tax people. 1450 it was deserted... maybe because if overuse of resources.

power shared in small group. women had dominate roles. Decisions made my consensus.
