Book 1

Trojans sailing, Juno sends them off course. Arrive in Carthage, Venus complains to Jupiter about Aeneas suffering, he reassures her that he will reach Italy, Venus sends Cupid to impersonate Ascanius and make Dido fall in love.

Book 2

Aeneas tells story of Troy, Sinon tricked the Trojans into taking in horse, Greeks enter city and slaughter Priam. Hector appeared to Aeneas in a dream telling him to leave, escapes with son and father but loses wife. Ghost of Creusa appears and tells him he has a future with new wife in Italy.

Book 3

7 years of wandering, Aeneas goes past Actium. Prophecy that he will know he has arrived at the destined place when they are so hungry they eat their tables. Anchises dies in Sicily.

Book 4

Story resumes, Dido gives into love and thinks they will build a city together but Aeneas gets a message from Jupiter reminding him of his destiny. Puts duty above love and leaves. She kills herself.

Book 5

Trojans return to Sicily and celebrate funeral games for Anchises. Inspired by Juno, women set fire to ships but Aeneas prays and Jupiter puts out fire. Aeneas lets some people stay in Sicily, he sets sail for Italy but Palinurus is lost overboard.

Book 6

Aeneas visits Sibyl at Cumae in order to get a prophecy from Apollo and visit his father in the underworld. He sees ghosts of Palinurus and Dido. He is shown Roman heroes waiting to be born and is inspired.

Book 7

Trojans arrive at Tiber and receive sign that they have reached their destination. King Latinus welcomes them and is willing for Lavinia to marry Aeneas. Juno intervenes and inspired Amata, Latinus’ wife, to object. Juno then causes Turnus to be consumed with anger. War breaks out.

Book 8

Aeneas leaves Trojan camp to seek help from Evander, when he arrives Evander and his son, Pallas, are engaged in celebrating the destruction of the monster Cacus by Hercules. Evander shows Aeneas the city and sends Pallas to fight with Trojans. Venus brings Aeneas new armour including shield that depicts the battle of Actium.

Book 9

Aeneas is away, Turnus attacks Trojan camp. Nisus and Euryalus set out at night to try to send message to Aeneas but are killed. Turnus eventually has to escape without doing much damage.

Book 10

Aeneas returns with Pallas who is killed by Turnus. Aeneas rages over the battlefield, killing many in revenge including Lausus and his father Mezentius.

Book 11

Both sides bury their dead, Pallas body is taken back to Evander. Drances proposes that Turnus face Aeneas alone, but battle continues. Camilla joins the fighting but is killed.

Book 12

Truce is agreed so single combat can take place. With help from Juturna, Turnus’ sister, the truce is broken and fighting follows. Latinus’ city is attacked, Amata commits suicide, Turnus prepares to meet Aeneas alone. Juno does a deal with Jupiter, she will stop interfering if the new race adopt Italian, not Trojan, customs. Jupiter agrees. Aeneas wounds Turnus who begs for mercy. Aeneas notices that he is wearing Pallas’ sword belt and kills him.
