Sternocleidomastoid

O- manubrium of sternum, clavicle


I- mastoid process of temporal bone, occipital bone


Action- bilateral- extends atlanto-occipital joint, flexes whole cervicle region


Unilaterally- rotation, lateral flexion


Nerve supply- CXII- accessory nerve, C2, C3 VPR


Blood supply- superior thyroid artery, occipital artery, posterior auricular artery, supraclavicular artery

O- post belly- mastoid notch to intermediate tendon (through fascial loop of hyoid bone) to anterior belly

A- depresses mandible or elevates hyoid (swallowing)

O- styloid process of temporal bone

I- greater cornu of hyoid bone


action- elevates hyoid

Vessels- subclavian, superficialvervical, suprascapular, occipital arteries


veins- external jugular, subclavian


nerves-brachial plexus nerve roots dorsal scapular and long thoracic, spinal accessory nerve, superficial cervical plexus, scalenus muscle

Splenis Capitis
O- lower 1/2 of ligamentum nuchae, SPs C7-T4

I- mastoid process, occipital bone


Action- bilaterally- extension of neck, unilaterally- lateral flexion and rotation of neck

blood supply- subclavian, superficial cervical, suprascapular, occipital

bilateral action of suboccipital muscles
rectus (maj/min)- extension of occipital bone/C1

oblique-superior-extension of occiput


inferior- no extension
