Custodial grandparents
Grandparents who have assumed parental responsibility for a grandchild
Significant grandparents
People for whom the real value of grandparenthood is that it reinforces the sense of family
Formal grandparenting style
Highly interested in their grandchildren. Although they often care for their grandchildren, they are not viewed as primary or surrogate caretakers. Have authority and control over the children in the absence of the parents.
Reservoir of family wisdom
Provide special skills, resources, wisdom, and knowledge to younger members of the family. Comparatively rare and usually associated with the grandfather.
Surrogate parent grandparents
Primary caretakers of the children. Active involvement in raising the children. Enforce family discipline and rules. Very common.
Distant figure grandparenting style
Contacts are infrequent, usually on holidays. Perceived as benevolent and emotionally involved, yet remote in terms of geographical distance.
Fun-seeker grandparenting style
Involved in playful, frequent relationships with their grandchildren. Do not exert any control or authority over grandchildren. View being with their grandchildren as a leisure activity.
Widowhood
State of having lost a spouse to death; widows- women who have lost their husbands; widowers- men who have lost their wives; People who are widowed are vulnerable in many ways and need active support
Mutuality
mutual self-disclosure, mutual commitment, and mutual expectations of the relationship
Deep (intimate) friends
Friendships based on intimate feelings between individuals
Intergenerational relationships
Interactions between individuals of different cohorts or generations
Extended family
Close relatives such as aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents
Interested related friends
Friendships that are based on some similarity of lifestyle or interest. These may include plants, pets, hobbies, or sports
Personal network
In addition to our immediate family, our convoy is shaped by other interpersonal relationships during adulthood.
Kinship network
The extended family-- aunts, uncles, and cousins. (See extended family.)
Filial responsibility
Refers to the perceived obligation (frequently determined by law, custom, or personal preference) with regard to the various types of services and social support that children should provide for their older parents
