What additional wage should an employee be paid for working a split shift

They must receive at least one additional hour of pay at minimum wage

What determines a split shift

When an employer requires employee to work two distinct shifts in one workday separated by more than one hour

On call

Organizations requiring employees to be on call during off hours may be required to compensate them for their time. To determine if this time is compensatable examine the degree to which an employee’s freedom is restricted during the period if the employee must remain on the employers premises or if the employees ability conduct personal business is impacted by the on-call work they are to be compensated for this time

Reporting time

When an employee reports to work percent of their schedule but there’s either no work for the employee to complete or they are sent home the employer must compensate the employee for reporting time the employee is entitled to at least half of their scheduled but on work time for no less than two hours and no more of four hours

When does the employer not have to pay reporting time

In the event of a natural disaster due to a utility failure outside of the companies control and they have not already conducted any work if the utility is restored the employer is not required to pay split shift pay when requiring an employee to come back to work

Off the clock work

All employees must be paid for any work done on behalf of the employer with or without the employers authorization including for reoccurring amount of time they spend off the clock prepping for or wrapping up a shift or work

Make up time

Employees are allowed to request to make up time if they are unable to work a full shift under certain circumstances the request must be submitted in writing and in advance by the employee and must be completed within the same work week



make up time may not permit the employee to work in excess of 11 hours in one workday or 40 hours in one work week

Travel time

If an employee is required to travel for the company they are entitled to pay for the time spent traveling
