Which type of ADHD is most frequent?
the combined type, showing six or more symptoms of inattention and six or more of hyperactivity-impulsivity
gender distribution in ADHD
- boys are 3 times more likelier than girls to develop ADHD
- but risk of under-identification due to less disruptive behavior by girls
what are characteristics of stimulant drugs in comparison to non-stimulant drugs?
stimulant drugs increase levels of dopamine and NE by enhancing the release and inhibiting the reuptake
- e.g. Ritalin

non-stimulant drugs influence only NE levels, they are not rewarding, thus not leading to addiction
- also it takes longer until they work in patiens with ADHD (approx. 2 weeks)
- can reduce tics caused by ritalin
- e.g. clonidine and guanfacide
What are cognitive similarities/differences in ADHD and autism? (with reference to Bradshaw's model)
- both show impairments in frontostriatal circuitry
- however each disorder is different in that they involve different combinations of deficits
- inhibitory difficulties/sustained attention is impaired in ADHD but normal in autism
- planning and attention shift is impaired in autism but normal in ADHD

thus when executive function is split into its components, an opposite pattern can be observed
--> division predicts a double dissociation between disorders
