Adaptation

A characteristic, a behavior, of any inherited trait that allows a species to survive and reproduce in a particular environment.


Species

A group of living things that are so closely related that they can breed with one another and produce offspring that can breed as well.

Primary/pioneer Species

The first living species to move into a lifeless environment; plants like mosses are typically pioneer species on land.

Native Species

Can either be endemic (found only within a particular region) or indigenous (found both within the region and elsewhere). They are the first species there to have lived there for long.

Invasive Species

A species that can be plant or animal that is not native to a specific location (an introduced species); and has a tendency to spread, which is believed to cause damage to the environment, human economy and/or human health.


Extinction


The permanent disappearance of a species.

Lichen

An organism that results from a close association between single-celled algae and fungi.

Hyphae


A network of cells that form threadlike structures in a fungus.
