Petition of Right
1628; laid out what the King couldn't do, ie.
-impose taxes w/o parliament
-forced billeting of soldiers
-imprisonment w/o cause
-restricted use of martial law
imposed as a result of these things during 30 yrs war, chuck reluctantly accepts
Root and Branch Petition
1640; called for abolishing episcopacy "roots and branches"
-signed by 15,000 londoners
-HoC reluctant to adopt, referred it to committee, kinda ignored until Root and Branch Bill in 1641, event. defeated
Bishop's Exclusion Act followed by the Clergy Act
1641; basically prevented those "in holy orders" from taking seats in parliament or the Privy Council
-later repealed in 1661 by Clergy Act
Militia Ordinance
1642; usurped King's previous ability to appoint leaders of county militias/any military forces he could use against parliament
-major step towards 1st civil war
Nineteen Propositions
1642; Parliament listed demands which would give them a larger share of power in governance (including making Kings minister accountable to parl., parl. supervision of foreign policy and defense, etc.)
-King rejected list, 2 month later 1st CW started
Solemn League and Covenant
1643; agreement between presbyt. Scots and Long Parl. to fight against the King in exchange for imposing scot system of governance in England
-scots kinda negated it when they chose to fight with Chuck in the 2nd civil war in return for basically same agreement
Self-Denying Ordinance
1645; all MPs who were also parliamentary army/navy officers had to choose one or the other
-improved military unity, led to creation of NMA
-Cromwell managed to hold on to both due to his military and MP skillz
Agreement of the People
1647; series of manifestos for constitutional change, published by levellers, agitators, and NMA
-subject of the Putney Debates, talked of freedom of religion, frequent parl., equality under the law
The Engagement
1647; secret treaty signed w/ Charles in response to Solemn league and cov.
Bill of Rights
1689; invites Wills and Mary to be rulers, sets out limits of the crown and rights of parl., also banned catholics from inheriting the throne
Exclusion Act
1679; bill attempting to legally exclude James II from the succession because he was a catholic
-tories hated it, whigs supported it, pretty much led to the creation of the whigs and the tories
Triennial Act
1641; requires parliament to meet for 50 days every 3 years
attempt to prevent kings form ruling without parliament has Chuck had done from 1629-1640
repealed 1664, reinstated 1694
Act of Settlement
1701, settled succession to Sophia Electress of Hanover
-led to 1707 union of Great Britain
-catholics and those who marry catholics are disqualified
Navigation Acts
1651; largely caused Anglo-Dutch war (52-54), led to greater english freedom and prosperity in sea trade, kept dutch merchants out of english ports
