ACTIVE TRANSPORT |
Sometimes substances needed by a cell have to be moved against a concentration gradient, from an area of low concentration to high concentration, across a partially permeable membrane. (= active transport)
|
|
ACTIVE TRANSPORT - ENERGY |
Cells can absorb mineral ions from very dilute solutions. Enables movement of substances such as sugars and ions through cell membranes. Energy is required for active transport to carry molecule across membrane. Energy comes from cellular respiration, provided by mitochondria. (eg. rhc, gut lining cells) |

ACTIVE TRANSPORT - PLANTS+ANIMALS |
PLANT: Mineral ions in soil (nitrate ion) are found in v. dilute solutions More dilute in soil than in plants. Plants can absorb these mineral ions against a concentration gradient ANIMAL: Sugar (glucose) is actively absorbed out of the gut and kidneys tubules into the blood.
