Mechanism of action
|
Binds with drugs and chemicals within the GI tract and decreases intestinal absorption in the overdose situation thereby preventing toxicity. The poison and charcoal compound is then excreted from the body.

Indications
|
Oral poisoning and/or ingestion of drugs or chemicals.
|
|
Contraindications
|
Do not use in pediatrics below 35 kg. Decreasing level of consciousness unless intubated prior to administration. Ingestion or poisonings due to cyanide, corrosives, petroleum distillates, ferrous sulfate (iron), ethanol, methanol, lithium, due to their large molecular size.

Black Stool, Constipation, Vomiting

|
1 gm/kg (75 gm is typical)

Special considerations
|
Do not administer prior to administration of Syrup of Ipecac.
Use with caution in acetaminophen overdoses. Follow Protocol |
