The Stanslavski System

A method for actors created by Constantine Stanslavski of the Moscow Art Theater. He is called the father of "Naturalism" or "Modern Theater."

Given circumstance

The circumstances of the character given by the author. They are related to setting, relationships, and events in the characters life.

Truth and belief

The unique truth of the theater, which is imaginary.

Reality of doing

The real activities in the world of the piece that are executed truthfully, without mime or "pretending."

Imagination

Imaginary visual images stimulated by the script.

Concentration of attention

The various elements of imagination and reality on which the actor can put his / her attention. An example includes Spheres of Attention.

View points

A method of concentration or attention for the actor created by Anne Bogart of SITI company.

Communion

The connection actor / character has to the given circumstances and the other actors in the scene.

Psychophysical gesture

A gesture that reflects the internal state of the character in an external manifestation.

Super-Objective

The driving motive for all of the characters actions.

Adaptation

Adjustments made in the characters through line of action in the face of obstacles.

Through line of actions

The series of actions taken throughout the characters journey.

Inner monologue

The images, thoughts and feelings the character experiences throughout the journey.
