What is the purpose of the turbine lube oil system?

To provide lubrication for the bearings of the General Electric turbine and generator.

What is the turbine lube oil system also used for?

What is the purpose of the turbine lube oil conditioning system?

It works in conjunction with the turbine lube oil system to continuously filter and condition the turbine lube oil by removing contaminants including water from the lube oil. The system also provides oil transfer capabilities for make up and draining of the turbine lube oil system.

How is the turbine lube oil system designed?

To continue the supply of lube oil to the turbine and generator in the event of a loss of AC power.

How is the turbine lube oil conditioning system designed?

For continuous unattended operation.

What is the purpose of the batch oil tank?

It has 2 compartments. In normal operation one compartment of the batch tank will be filled with a fresh charge of a turbine oil for emergency use and to maintain the turbine oil tank at normal operating level. The 2nd compartment will be empty and is used to provide a storage space for draining either turbine oil tank should be necessary to make repairs.

The turbine lube oil exit in the turbine leave oil cooler is designed to be maintained between what temperatures?

110°F and 120°F

Where is the pressurized oil supply piping located?

It is located inside the larger return lines to minimize the risk of fires.

What does the turbine lube oil system do?

Provides cooling and lubricating oil to the turbine thrust and journal bearings during normal operations.

What does the turbine lube oil system consist of?

• Turbine lube oil reservoir

• Main shaft driven lube oil pump

• Booster pump

• Two AC auxiliary oil pumps

• Turning gear oil pump

DC emergency oil pump

• Vapor extractor

• Turbine lube oil cooler

What does the turbine lube oil purification and storage system do?

Filters a portion of the lube oil taken from the turbine lube oil reservoir, and re circulates back to the reservoir.

What does the turbine lube oil purification and storage system consist of?

Lube oil conditioner (Bowser)

• Lube oil filter pump

• Lube oil transfer pump

• Batch oil transfer pump

• Batch oil tank

What is the purpose of the main oil pump?

Located in the front standard on an independent shaft and operated at the same speed at the turbine. During normal operation, when the turbine is operating at rated speed, the main shaft driven lube oil pump (main oil pump) is the primary pumping source of lube oil for the entire turbine lube oil system. It is supplied with oil at about 15 to 20 psi by an oil driven booster pump located in the oil tank. Oil discharged from the main oil pump is at about 200 psi and is piped to a hydraulic header.

What is the purpose of the booster pump?

Located in the turbine lube oil reservoir, it pumps oil from the reservoir to the suction of the main shaft driven pump (main oil pump). The booster pump is necessary to provide the proper net positive suction head to the main shaft driven lube oil pump, since the lube oil reservoir is at a lower elevation than the main pump.

How is the booster pump driven?

By the high pressure oil discharged from the main shaft driven pump (main oil pump). This arrangement makes the lube oil system independent of electric power requirements during normal operation.

What is operating oil?

The portion of the flow of oil from the main shaft driven lube oil pump (main oil pump) that is distributed to the mechanical hydraulic control system for use and turbine control.

What is the purpose of the auxiliary oil pumps?

There are 2 motor driven auxiliary oil pumps mounted vertically on top of the lube oil tank. The primary purpose is to supply both hydraulic oil and lubricating oil during start up and shutdown periods when the turbine is below rated speed and the main oil pump is ineffective. Both auxiliary oil palms must be operated simultaneously to provide hydraulic pressure.

What is the purpose of the turning gear oil pump?

Used to supply lubricating oil to the turbine generator bearings when the unit is on turning gear. It also serves as an automatic backup lubricating oil supply in the event of failure of the turbine auxiliary oil pumps. Unlike the auxiliary pumps, however, the turbine gear oil pump is not capable of supplying hydraulic oil to the turbine; it is strictly a bearing oil pump.

What is the purpose of the emergency bearing oil pump?

Mounted vertically on top of the turbine lube oil tank. It is the final backup oil supply to the turbine generator bearings. It is driven by a DC motor so the emergency bearing oil pump will operate even in the event of a complete AC power failure. Discharges directly into the bearing header.

What is the normal operating oil level in the turbine oil tank?

24" below the top of the tank.

What equipment is located on top of the turbine lube oil tank?

• The 2 auxiliary oil pumps

• Turning gear oil pump

• Emergency bearing oil pump

• Turbine oil Fuller

• Vapor extractor

What is the purpose of the booster baffler valve and the bypass baffler valve?

To control the operation of the oil driven end of the booster pump and reduce the oil pressure to approximately 40 psi before it enters the turbine lube oil cooler.

What is the function of the lube oil tank?

To store lube oil for use by the turbine lube oil system.

What is the purpose of the vapor extractor?

Used to maintain approximately 0.5 to 2 inches of water vacuum in the area above the oil surface in the lube oil tank to minimize water vapor condensation and prevent the build-up of explosive gasses.

What is the purpose of the hydrogen seal oil system?

Provides seal oil to the shaft seals at both ends of the generator to prevent the escape of hydrogen from the casing along the shaft to prevent air from entering the casing.
