What is the purpose of the Circulating Water System?

Also used for the Nash Vacuum Pump Heat Exchangers.

List all of the equipment it goes to.

What is the purpose of the Traveling Screens?

To prevent small debris and marine life from entering the Circulating Water System.

What is the purpose of the Trash Racks?

To prevent large debris and marine life from entering the Circulating Water System and damaging the Salt Water Circulating Pump Impeller.

Identify and describe the process of the Horizontal Screen Wash Pump

440 volt pump that takes it's suction downstream of the Salt Water Circulating Pump Discharge MOV.

Identify and describe the process for the Closed Cooling Water Heat Exchangers

Located on elevation 19 beneath the condenser shell. Cold salt water from the Circulating Water System travels through the heat exchanger tubes from the west end to the east end of the heat exchanger. The Closed Cooling Water travels from the east end of the heat exchanger around the tubes and out the west end. This is called counter flow and allows the the circulating water system to cool the closed cooling water for circulation through plant equipment for cooling purposes.

Identify and describe the purpose of the Dilution Pumps

Located west of the plant between 1+2 intake canals and 3+4 intake canals. Purpose is to cool the water leaving the discharge canal into the long island sound if it gets too hot.

What's the purpose of the Condensers?

1. To condense the turbine exhaust steam back into liquid for for reuse through the system.

2. Maintains back pressure at the turbine exhaust below atmospheric pressure.

3. To deaerate the condensate.

Corrective action for low oil level on pump/motor

Find out the type of oil the pump/motor takes and fill to proper level

Corrective action for low cooling water pressure

1. Check CCW tank for water level. If low, turn on make up to fill tank to proper level. If water level is good or pressure does not fix, go to step 2.

2. Check pumps for pressure. Swap pumps.

Corrective action for high/low level in CCW Tank

Turn on the make up

Corrective action for dirty/plugged CCW Heat Exchanger

Swap Heat Exchangers

Corrective action for leak in heat exchanger

Swap heat exchangers

Corrective action for high/low cooling water temperature

1. Throttle salt water block valve to CCW Heat Exchanger open/closed to adjust temperature.

2. If temperature doesnt lower with fully open block valve, change heat exchangers (Dirty Heat Exchanger).

Corrective action for standby pump rotating

There is a bad check valve. Close the discharge valve

Corrective action for bad packing leaks on pumps

Turn on service water to help seal the packing temporarily. Contact Control Room to get packing fixed.

Corrective action for high vibration on pump/motor

Check temperature and oil level. Could be low on oil or temperature too hot and lube oil is too thin causing vibration. Cool the lube oil or add lube oil.

Name equipment cooled by the Closed Cooling Water System

1. Stator winding liquid coolers

2. H2 Coolers

3. Soot blowing air compressors

4. Instrument air compressors

5. Boiler circulating pump oil coolers

6. Boiler circulating pump seal pumps

7. Gas recirculation fan bearings

8. Forced draft fan bearings

9. Induced draft fan bearings

10.Carbon re-injection blowers

11. Turbine lube oil cooler

12. Fluid drive oil cooler

13. Condensate pump motors

14. Nash heat exchangers

How do you take a CCW Heat Exchanger out of service?

1. Before take HE out of service, make sure other HE is in service.

2. Close CCW HE CCW inlet block valve.

3. Close both CCW HE 1/4 salt water inlet block valves.

4. Close both CCW HE 1/4 salt water outlet block valves.

5. Close CCW HE salt water outlet side vent block valve.

6. Open CCW HE outlet drain block valve.

Draw the Salt Water Intake diagram to the plant

Draw the Salt Water Circulation diagram inside the the plant to the discharge

What is the primary source of make-up for the Nash Vacuum Pump seal water?

2nd Stage Condensate Pump

What is used as a secondary source of make-up for the Nash Vacuum Pump seal water?

Service Water through a hose connection.

What is the purpose of the Continuous Flow Indicators?

To show if there is air inside the equipment

What happens if there is a loss of vacuum inside the condenser due to the Nash Vacuum Pump failing?

What is the corrective action for if you see a high temperature difference between Nash seal water out and saltwater in?

Switch heat exchangers. The heat exchanger in use could be too dirty to allow proper heat transfer.

What does a high air offtake temperature indicate?

What is the purpose of the intake Stop Gate?
