How does the amplitude of accommodation vary as we age every ten years?

10 years old 14.

20 years old 10.

30 years old 8.

40 years old 5.

45 years old 3.

50 years old 2.

60 years old 1.

70 years old less than 1.

Describe how the amplitude of accommodation is measured using the push-up method:

1) subject wears distance correction and the eye not being tested is occluded.

2) subject views small print about 50cm from eye.

3) the target is moved until the print becomes 'just blurred'.

4) the distance of the target from the spec plane is measured and converted into diopters.

5) the test is repeated with the other eye.

6) normally right and left are similar to within about 1.00D.

Explain Range of accommodation, true near point and artificial near point:

The range of accommodation is the distance between the near and far points.

The true near point is the point conjugate with the macula by refraction, at the uncorrected fully accommodated eye.

The artificial near point is the point conjugate with the macula by refraction at the fully accommodated eye with the patient wearing their spec correction.
