Entity
person, place, thing or event on which information can be obtained
Attribute
piece of information describing a particular entity
Key field
field in a record that uniquely identifies instances of that unique record so that it can be retrieved, updated or sorted. (Example: SSN, but not name because other people have the same name. Product number, but not product name)
Database
collection of data organized to service many applications efficiently by storing and managing data so that they appear to be in one location
Database Management System (DBMS)
special software that permits an organization to centralize data, manage them efficiently, and provide access to the stored data by application programs
How does DBMS solve the problems of traditional file environment?
1. reduce complexity of the IS environment 2. reduce data redundancy and inconsistency 3. eliminate data confusion 4. create program-data independence 5. enhance flexibility 6. reduce development and maintenance costs 7. centralized management of data
Relational DBMS
primary method for organizing and maintaining data today in information systems. It organizes data in 2-dimensional tables with rows and columns (relations). Each row represents a record and each column represents an attribute or field
Database Warehouse
database with archival, querying, and data exploration tools and is used for storing historical and current data of potential interest to managers throughout the organization and from external sources.
Business Intelligence
Tools that analyze and access information to see new patterns, relationships, and insights that can be used to make decisions (usually in the form of software)
Data quality audits
structured survey of the accuracy and level of completeness of the data in an IS.
Data Cleansing
activities for detecting and correcting data in a database that are incorrect, incomplete, improperly formatted, or redundant. Also enforces consistency among different sets of data
Simple Network
consist of 2 or more connected computers
Basic network
computers, network interfaces, connection, network operating system software, hub or switch
Large company network infrastructure
relies on public and private infrastructures, traditional telephone, mobile communication, wireless local-area networks, video conferencing, corporate websites, intranets, extranets, Internet
Physical transmission media: Twisted wire
up to 100 Mbps
Physical transmission media: Microwave
up to 600 Mbps
Physical transmission media: Satellite
up to 600 Mbps
Physical transmission media: Coaxial cable
up to 1 Gbps
Physical transmission media: Fiber optic cable
up to 6 Tbps
Local Area Network (LAN)
designed to connect personal computers and other digital devices within half a mile. Requires its own dedicated channel
Components of LAN
computers, NOS on dedicade server computer, cable connecting the device, NIC, switches or hubs, and a router
