What do we know about Abraham?
He was in the line of descendants from Adam to Christ.

He lived with pagans in the area of Iraq in todays world ... in Ur, of the Chaldeans, who lived in the area of ancient Babylon

God called him to go to Canaan (Israel) and Abraham would be part of God's plan for the world

That plan involved Jesus Christ, and Abraham was faithfully obedient so God made promises to him as a reward.
What are the main points of what God promised Abraham (as well as his son Isaac and grandson Jacob?)
** A great name

** A son Isaac,

** a descendant Jesus who would rule the world without enemies (who would be overcome)

** his descendants would be a nation who would own Israel forever.

** all the earth would benefit because of him, his descendants and Jesus.

** He would be resurrected and see and be part of all this
Where can you find these promises from God to Abraham?
Genesis 12 v 1 - 3 & 7

Genesis 13 v 15 - 18,

Genesis 15 v 5, 13 - 16, 18 - 21

Genesis 17 v 2 - 8, 15,16,19

Genesis 22 v 16 - 18
Does Abraham even matter any more? that was the Old Testament!
Jesus refers to Abraham as looking forward to him

Paul says that the things God promised Abraham are actually the same as the Gospel
(Galations 3 v 8)

We get baptised into Jesus (Abrahams descendant) and we're counted as heirs of the Promise made to Abraham about the future of the world, and we can be counted as part of the plan of God (Galations 3 v 24 on)
But has all those promises about Abraham and his descendants living in Israel been fulfilled? that's happened already, so its not something to be intersted in?
True that Abraham was the father of Jews and some of the Arab peoples, that the Jews lived in Israel, but not true about "forever" or the way in which the whole world fits into the picture.

Some of this is to come.

That future will be when Gods kingdom is set up.

Gods kingdom on earth is the same thing that Abraham was promised on earth, and that Paul says the Gospel is.
What happened after Abraham died?
his descendants became the Jews of bible times.

The Jews were to come back to Israel at the last days, and they did this in 1948.

Jesus will return to earth (Acts 1 v 6 and 11) and set up the Kingdom of God, and Abraham and others will be raised from the dead and be part of a new one world united order.
