English Abortion

In 1967 abortions became legal in the UK.

It's an dangerous life!

Previous to 1967 women were not allowed to have an abortion. Dangerous backstreet abortions (illegal abortions carried out by untrained people) were often carried out.

The Check List

Two doctors must agree

Mothers physical or mental health at risk OR

The physical or mental health of other children is at risk OR

The child will be physically or mentally handicapped

Must be carried out by 24th week of pregnancy -this was voted on in 2008 and was kept the same.

“Late stage” (after 20 weeks) abortions are unusual, and generally only allowed where there is a likelihood of a severely disabled baby being born, and/or of the mother being physically harmed by the birth of the child. In 2005, only 1% of UK abortions were carried out after 20 weeks.
