Criteria for a Major Depressive Episode
5 of the following symptoms for at least 2 weeks (most be most of the day nearly every day) and must include on the first 2
• Depressed mood
• Anhedonia (loss of pleasure in previously enjoyable activities)
• Significant weight change
• Significant sleep pattern change
• Psychomotor agitation or retardation
• Fatigue
• Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
• Lowered concentration
• Recurrent thoughts of death
Exempt if there has been a loss of a love one within 6 moths
Criteria for a Manic Episode
A distinct period of abnormally and persistently alleviated or irritable mood for over 1 week including 3 of the following
• Inflated self esteem
• Decreased need for sleep
• Excessively talkative
• Distractible
• Racing thoughts
• Increase in goal oriented activity
• Excessive risky pleasure seeking
• Significant distress
If hospitalized or jailed it is assumed there is a manic episode even if all criteria are not met
