the study of the nature, causes, and treatment of mental disorders



epidemiology

study of the frequency and distribution of diseases, disorders, or health behaviors within a population

incidence

proportion of NEW cases of a disorder that occur in a population over a given period of time

comorbidity

presence of more than one condition within the same time period

differential diagnosis

the process of differentiating between two or more conditions that share similar signs or symptoms

etiology

the cause, set of causes, or manner of causation of a disease or condition."a disease of unknown etiology"

generalizability

degree to which the results of a study based on a sample can be said to represent the results that would be obtained from the entire population from which the sample was drawn (type of external validity)

external validity

extent to which the conclusions from your research study can be generalized to the people outside of your study. There are three types of generalization: population, environmental, and temporal (ex is generalizability)

internal validity

addresses the relationship between two variables. It refers to the extent that a study can rule out or make unlikely alternate explanations of the result (methodologically sound)

criterion group

a group examined for characteristics that others belonging to the group are already recognized as having, generally with the intent of assuring a test is legitimate
