Thesis: In both Shakespeare’s Othello and Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, Emilia and The Wife of Bath accept the role of women in different ways as Emelia accepts her position and acts within society's expectations while the Wife of Bah goes against society's expectations of women because she uses.her power over men.
An housbonde I wol have, I wol nat lette, Which shal be both my dettour and my thral, And have his tribulacioun withal Upon his flessh, wyl that I am his wif. (The Wife of Bath Prologue, p.160-163)
But sith I hadde hem hoolly in myn hond, And sith they hadde me yeven all hir lond, What sholde I taken keep hem for to plese, But if it were for my profit and myn ese?
(The Wife of Bath Prologue, p.211-214)
"I am glad I have found this napkin: This was her first remembrance from the Moor: My wayward husband hath a hundred times Woo'd me to steal it; but she so loves the token, For he conjured her she should ever keep it, That she reserves it evermore about her To kiss and talk to. I'll have the work ta'en out, And give't Iago: what he will do with it Heaven knows, not I; I nothing but to please his fantasy." (Othello, p. 117 lines 292-301)
"Who would not make her husband a cuckold to make him a monarch? I should venture purgatory for't" (Othello, p.181 lines 72-73).
