Characteristics of pain leaking or ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms

- sudden severe abdominal pain/back ache


- renal colic (kidney stone) type pain. New presentation of this in over 50yr old suspect AAA even in absence of palpable mass.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm associated symptoms

- collapse


- hypotension with bilateral lower limb ischaemia or mottling


- history of smoking


- hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia

Appendicitis characteristics of pain

- constant pain, increasing in intensity, often starting in peri umbilical area


- pain settles in lower right quadrant


- rebound tenderness in right iliac fossa.


- coughing and walking may exacerbate pain


- older patients may present with generalised pain, distension, decreased bowel sounds

Appendicitis associated symptoms

- nausea/vomiting


- loss of appetite


- constipation


- increased temp >37.5


- diarrhoea
