Who are AAC devices for?
Individuals who are non-verbal
What is a low-tech device?
They don't use electronic instruments (e.g. communication book, message board)
What is a high-tech device?
Use electronic instruments (e.g. computers)

Systems or devices that show the message to their communication partner

Arbitrary, abstract, or geometric - they dont resemble the objects they represent
What is direct selection?
The user selects a message by touching a key pad, touching an item or oject, depressing an electronic key, pointing, or some other direct means.

The user is offered available messages by a mechanical device or communication partner

No instruments or external aids are used. Rather, the individual uses gestures and other patterned movements, which may be accompanied by some speech.

It is useful for individuals who have profound motoric impairmnts and limited hand mobility that they can't use a manual switching device. Uses bio-electrical signals such as muscle-action potentials to activate and display messages
What is Facilitated Communication (FC)?
Is a technique of language treatment for individuals with severe impairments such as ASD or CP. The facilitator uses physical contact with the individual's hand, wrist or elbow to facilitate pointing on a message board, writing, or typing.
Is Facilitated Communication (FC) known to be effective?
No because the messages are controlled mostly by the therapist.
In a school setting, who determines if a child is eligible for an AAC device?
The IEP team
What are the prerequisites for communication intervention using an AAC device?
There are no prerequisites -AAC can be used effectively with individuals who have profound learning and behavioral difficulties. No one is too disabled to learn to improve their communication skills.
