What does AAC mean?
Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices
What is the use.purpose of an AAC Device?
They supplement deficient oral comm by providing alt means of communication for children that are limited orally.
Name appropriate candidates for a device.
Children with autism
Severe physical impairments
Severe intellectual disabilities
Adults with apraxia, aphasia, CO, laryngectomy, and spinal cord injures.
What are low tech devices?
Devices that don;'t encorporate electronics. Notepads, and message boards.
What are high tech devices?
Devices that use electronics such as computers systems.
What are displays?
The system that shows a message to the communication partner. This is how the user communicates a message. These are communication boards or computer screens.
What are the symbols used?
Iconic-pictures
noniconic- arbitrary, geometric,abstract representations of object and are specifically taught. Flexible plastic chips, or shapes are an example.
How do the users send mesages?
Through scanning and selection
Direct selection
The user selects a message to communicate by using a key pad, using a button, pointing.

The user is offered a message to communicate by a mechanical device or communication partner,
What is unaided AAC?
Gestural paired with speech. NO instruments or external aids.
Examples:

What is aided AAC?
Unaided gestures combined with instrumental devices that can be mechanical or non mechanical
What is facilitated communication?
Hand over hand guidance used to facilitate language with severely impaired children. Physical contact is used with the child's hand, wrist, or elbow to facilitate pointing, writing, or typing a message.
