Mali Empire
was a West African civilization of the Mandinka. The empire was founded by Sundiata Keita and became renowned for the wealth of its rulers, especially Mansa Musa I. The Mali Empire had many profound cultural influences on West Africa allowing the spread of its language, laws and customs along the Niger River. Empire was inspirational to African Americans b/c it resembled their history. A source of pride.
Ayuba Suleiman Diallo
was a famous Muslim slave who was a victim of the Atlantic slave trade. Ayuba's memoirs were published as one of the earliest slave narratives.
his intelligence and monetary prowess, he was able to legally escape the hardships of slavery and return back home to Africa, which shows other aspects can rise above race.
Anthony Johnson
Anthony Johnson was the most wealthy black man to have purchased his contract. Proof that Virginia's free blacks sometimes operated on an equal footing with whites.
Elizabeth Key Grinstead
was the first woman of African ancestry who fought and won her freedom from slavery b/c her father was white. She was able to free her son too. But also caused Virginia to pass a law that ordered Negro women’s children to serve according to the condition of the mother.
Bacon’s Rebellion
The first rebellion in the American colonies in which discontented frontiersmen took part to protest against the Royal Governor of Virginia, Berkeley. The rebellion played a role in the movement of large tobacco planters moving from indentured servants to African slave labor.
Phillis Wheatley
She was the first published African American poet. Her talent showed that her race was not inferior. Her work was a form of resistance.
Benjamin Banneker
was a free African American astronomer, mathematician, surveyor, almanac author and farmer. He made a clock that struck every hour. Banneker was the first high profile Black Civil Rights leader nearly a decade before Harriet Tubman. He wrote the first publicly documented protest letter, which was sent to Secretary of State , Thomas Jefferson, denouncing the Bill of Rights as disingenuous. His work showed he was not inferior.
Northwest Ordinance of 1787
first organized territory of the US and in this territory slavery was banned. This was an initial step towards ending slavery.
1793 Fugitive Slave Act
It made it a federal crime to assist an escaping slave and now freed slaves were denied constitutional rights. The Underground railroad developed b/c of the act.
Three-Fifths Compromise
Legally declared that African Americans were not fully human.
Toussaint L’Ouverture
A leader of the Haitian Revolution. He was born a slave and led enslaved Africans to victory over Europeans, abolished slavery, and secured native control over the colony. Source of inspiration.
Jacob Lawrence
A black painter influenced by the shapes and colors of Harlem. He is one of the best-known 20th century African American painters. His paintings depicted the epic Great Migration of Blacks from the rural South to the urban North. Highlighted the beauty of Africans past = inspiration.

Mother Bethel Church
located in Philadelphia and founded by Richard Allen. One of the first African-American churches in the U.S. important b/c it was forming a new church so they could have control over their own faith, separate from whites.

organization that helped in founding Liberia, a colony on the coast of West Africa, which eventually declared itself an independent state. Founded by a group of white men and wanted to expel blacks from the country
Sojourner Truth
an American slave, abolitionist and women's rights activist. Her best-known speech, Ain't I a Woman?, was given at a Women's Rights Convention. Example of gender and race – not inferior and example of resistance
Harriet Tubman
was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and Union spy during the U.S. Civil War. She escaped from slavery and made thirteen missions to rescue over seventy slaves by using the Underground Railroad. Example of resistance
Robert Smalls
a slave who became a national hero when he freed himself and his family from slavery by commandeering a Confederate transport ship, The Planter, to freedom. The U.S. Navy enlisted him; he reduced prejudice against blacks in the service.
Maria Stewart
was an African American public speaker, abolitionist, and feminist. Stewart was the first black woman to lecture about women’s rights. First woman to speak in front of mixed audience
Martin Delany
(8, 79, 84, 121) The “Father of Black Nationalism” He traveled to Nigeria and signed treaties permitting the settlement of black Americans.
Henry Highland Garnet
(84,121) struggled for free black civil rights; joined the government-sponsored push for resettlement in Haiti. He helped recruit United States Colored Troops and then supported the black soldiers. First black minister to preach to the House of Representatives.
Elizabeth Keckly
(96) was a former slave who’s sewing skills bought her freedom. Became close with the Lincolns, making clothes for the president’s wife.
