Para 1: Briefly describe Augustine's theodicy and it's main premises. Give two points.

-The main premise of the theodicy was an attempt to justify Gods existence and attributes in spite of all the evil and suffering in the world.

-Theodicy was named after the 4th and 5th century theologian, philosopher and Saint Augustine of Hippo, is a Christian theodicy attempting to explain the probability of an all loving, all knowing and all powerful God.

Para 2: What Augustine's two assumptions and what must they mean? Give two points.

-Evil is not from God-Gods creation is faultless and perfect, and the other being that evil comes from within the world.

-Must mean that if evil is not the fault of God and came from within the world, humans abusing free will must have caused evil.

Para 3: What did Augustine say about original sin and seminally present sin? Give 5 points.

-Augustine theorised that humans suffer as a result of original sin.

-God gave Adam and Eve free will but told them that they must not eat fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

-Adam and Eve disobeyed this free will and according to Augustine acting against the will of God in this way destroyed the delicate balance of the world and it's state of perfection.

-This sin then passed on to all humans (seminally present) which according to Augustine is how original sin was passed to all humanity.

-This seminally present evil must therefore mean that evil is the fault of humans, not God.

-Augustine thought natural evil developed through the loss of order in nature which he defined as the 'penal consequences of sin'.

-Problem of evil is the fault oh human sin which disrupted the course of nature which lead to evil.

What did Augustine say about God not getting involved in the course of evil? Give three points.

-God is justified not to get involved as he made free will so that humans would be free to make their own choices although humans abused their free will leading to sin and evil.

-God have humans a life line by sacrificing Jesus to wipe out original sin although evil still exists so suffering is a consequence of human action.

-If God is really just he would send us all to hell as we have all sinned.
