Dot matrix printers use what methods of pulling paper?
Dot matrix printers use either a tractor-feed or pressure roller (friction) method of pulling paper through the printer,
What does Home Position mean?
Home Position..Dot matrix and many ink jet printers require the print head to start in an exact location. When the print head is aligned, many printers sound two beeps
Home Position.. Mechanics?
Home Position.. Mechanics?
Some
printers use a system of counting a series of pulses sent by the printer's motor. When the correct number of pulses
has been counted, the print head is in the home position. Other printers use an optical sensing device to locate the
print head in the home position.
What causes Dot Matrix Paper Jams?
Dot Matrix Paper Jams...
The tractor gears in a dot-matrix printer don't always turn at the same speed, so if
the paper isn't lined up exactly and the tractor wheels don't turn at the same speed, the paper
begins to develop a slant as it moves through the printer and eventually it may jam.
What causes Dot Matrix to Print faded on one side of the page?
: A misaligned platen can result in faded printing on one side of the page.

This is different than a worn-out ribbon or a misaligned / defective print head,
Because: The faded printing is only on one side of the page.
Dot Martix Printer: Characters are faded in one area is caused by what?
Dot Martix Printer: Characters are faded in one area is caused by :If the characters themselves are slightly darker in one area (or
you only see one part of the character, the bottom half for example), this would indicate a
misaligned (or defective) print head.
Dot Matrix:
Patchy, faint or uneven printing throughout the document?
If there is faded printing that is not
localized to one side of the page or another; it is more than likely that the problem is a worn-out
ribbon.
Prints a dark line through the center of the text?
A defective print head usually prints text
successfully but with a consistent defect such as a missing stripe, consistently prints a dark line
through the center of text or text cut off at the margins.
Print has light and then dark lines in the text?
Improper paper advancement can cause alternating
lines to be slightly shorter or longer, resulting in the compression or stretching of the printing
height, thus making the printed text have dark or light lines.
maintenance station?
The ink cartridges also generally have a device called a maintenance station that keeps the
ink from drying out and it also cleans the print heads and nozzles.
Ink Jet...Explain mechanics?
Ink jet printer cartridges hold ink in chambers. Ink jet printers have a printer pump that primes the ink before printing
starts. Once it is primed, a metal terminal at the top of the ink chamber is heated. This heating boils and
vaporizes the ink and builds up pressure inside the chamber. Once pressure is built, pinhole sized nozzles in the
cartridge control when, where and how much ink is dispensed. These pinholes are used to spray ink on the page
to form characters and images as patterns of ink dots. This similar to the dot-matrix print head dots, but with many
more dots and at a much higher resolution.
Inkjet:
Ultimately, what is used to put the ink on the paper?
and
Safety issue with ink jets?
Heat is used to vaporize the ink for printing.

Saftey issue: You should NEVER
touch the print head of an inkjet printer or you may be burned.
Ink JetGenerates printouts that go from light to dark across the page?
The most likely cause is a malfunctioning
printer “primer” pump. If this problem occurs, the pump may have to be repaired or replaced.
InkJet:

Prints a dark line through the center of the text?
A defective print head.

Usually prints text but,
with a consistent defect such as a missing stripe, or a dark line through the center of text

or text cut off at the margins.
Ink Jet Printed pages get successively lighter?
Successively lighter:
Usually this means the ink cartridge is nearly empty and needs to be refilled or replaced
Ink Jet Paper jams?
Paper jams in inkjet printers are generally caused by
a misaligned or a worn paper sheet feeder.
Electro photographic (EP) printing?
Electro Photographic (EP)better known today as the laser printing.
A laser printer still puts dots on a piece of paper, what is used?
Laser printer toner is a near-microscopic combination of plastic resin and some organic
compounds bonded to iron particles
These EP cartridges sometimes referred to as Organic-photo Conducting
(OPC) drums, are very sensitive to what?
These EP cartridges sometimes referred to as
_____________--___________ ______
(OPC) drums, are very sensitive to:

Light and Temperature.

They should always be kept in a cool dark place until
they need to be used in a printer.
Laser printers are generally judged by ???? and by ?????

Standard black and white laser printers are generally rated between ??? and ???? and ?? to ?? PPM. Color
laser printers can achieve ?????? resolution and generally print slightly ?????? than black and white.
Laser printers are generally judged by their DPI and by the number of pages that they put out in a minute or pages per
minute (PPM). Standard black and white laser printers are generally rated between 300dpi-1200dpi and 12-21 PPM. Color
laser printers can achieve about the same resolution but generally print slightly slower than black and white.
The Paper Feed Process
When you send a PRINT command to the laser printer:
Main motor begins to turn which starts the:
EP drum,
Fusing rollers,
and Paper feed rollers

Three rollers controlled by separate clutch mechanism aren't part of
this process:
Paper pick-up roller and a Pair of registration rollers.
The Laser Printing Process
6 steps?
1. Cleaning
2. Charging or Conditioning
3. Writing
4. Developing
5. Transferring
6. Fusing
Step 1: Cleaning:
Step 1: Cleaning:
The EP drum is cleaned with a rubber blade.
Step 2: Charging or Conditioning:
Step 2: Charging or Conditioning:
The EP drum is given a negative charge of about -600 volts by the primary corona
wire.
Step 3: Writing:
Step 3: Writing: A laser beam writes to the EP drum causing portions of the drum to become positively charged.
Step 4: Developing:
Step 4: Developing: The negatively charged toner particles are attracted to the areas of the drum that were hit by the
positively charged laser.
Step 5: Transferring:
Step 5: Transferring: The transfer corona wire charges the paper with a positive charge. The EP drum turns as the
paper runs beneath it and the negatively charged toner is attracted to the positively charged paper.
Step 6: Fusing:
6. Fusing: The paper runs through the fuser assembly that is heated to about 350 degrees F. The fuser’s high
temperature and pressure fuse or melt the toner into the paper. DO NOT touch the fuser and fuser
assembly as they can become very hot.
Laser Printer pulls multiple paper sheets at one time?
This is usually due to the fact that improper
media was used (for example, a paper of unusual thickness), there is a worn separation pad, or there
is excessive humidity in printer or paper storage location.
Ink Jet or Laser:
Paper Jam?
Paper Jam: When a paper jam occurs, the most common cause of the jam is either more than one
page entering the system, or the paper separation pad is worn or malfunctioning. Typically, if the
wrong type of paper is being used, the pick-up roller can't move the first page. If the pick-up roller
can move the paper, then the most likely problem is that the separator pad can't separate two sheets.
Laser: Page comes out blank:
Page comes out blank: This problem can usually be narrowed down to the toner cartridge or a
malfunctioning imaging laser. Check the cartridge to insure that it is not empty or defective and that
the sealing tape was not left on it. If the laser beam is not hitting the drum and positively charging it,
then no toner will be attracted to the paper to fuse with it. If there is an image on the photoconductor,
and the page is still blank, then you know it is not a toner problem but either the transfer corona or
the high-voltage power supply has failed.
Laser: It is printing too light:
Printer is printing too light: The transfer corona wire is probably malfunctioning and not providing a
strong charge to the paper so that it picks up the toner, or the High-Voltage DC power supply is
malfunctioning and not allowing the transfer corona wire to provide a strong charge to the paper.
Laser: Printer generates a totally black page:
Printer generates a totally black page: This is most often attributed to a malfunctioning Primary
Corona Wire. The wire is not negatively charging the drum, therefore the entire drum is positively
charged and writing on the entire page.
Laser: “Memory Overflow” error:
“Memory Overflow” error: In order to correct this you may have to reduce the Resolution
Enhancement Technology in the laser printer settings, decrease the print resolution, or add more
RAM to the printer itself.
Laser: Print smears upon contact, letters can be rubbed off the paper:
Print smears upon contact, letters fall of the paper: The fuser assembly is responsible for heating the
paper so that the toner will melt or fuse with it. If the fuser assembly does not sufficiently heat the
paper, then the toner will not melt or fuse with it.
Laser: “Out of Memory” error:
“Out of Memory” error:
This is caused when either the printer’s buffer itself or the printer spooler of a
print server computer has filled to capacity. To remedy this you can either add memory to the print
device or increase the space on the hard drive for the print spooler. If the spooler is on a partition
that has become full, some print jobs may not be able to be printed due to lack of memory resources.
Laser: Prints wavy lines:
9. Prints wavy lines: Generally caused by a defective toner cartridge.
Solid Ink Printers:
Solid Ink Transfer:
Melt and liquefy color or black solid ink sticks.
The liquefied ink is then sprayed onto a transfer drum
using nozzles, similar to inkjet printers.
The transfer drum then passes the sprayed ink onto the paper where it is:
cold fused and pressed onto the page.
Direct Thermal Printers:
Direct thermal printers use special print head pins to produce dots on specially coated paper. The print head
actually “burns” dots into the paper using heated pins.
Dye Sublimation:
Dye sublimation paper contains four transparent sheets of cellophane-like material that contains special dyes that liquefy
when heated to certain temperatures. The dye then cools and solidifies onto paper. Dye sublimation paper contains four
colored transparent sheets that produce all of the colored images. They are: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. To produce
the images, the special paper is passed through a print head that uses different temperatures to produce the different
colored dots. Each color responds to a different temperature. All of the different colored dots blend to form true colored
images. Unlike inkjet printers that produce separate cyan, magenta, yellow and black colored dots to form the images.
Dye sublimation printing is generally used for color photos or high color graphics. Prices for this type of printer have hit
levels that home consumers can now enjoy this technology to produce their own, high-quality color photos.
Thermal wax printers:
Thermal wax printers use a series of wax coated transparent sheets similar to dye sublimation technology. Instead of
heating special dyes with a print head, wax is used. The melted wax is then fused to regular paper. No special paper is
needed, like in dye sublimation printing. Thermal are specialty printers used mainly for printing high quality, color
transparencies.
Printing a Printer Self-Test Page: 2 Ways
This will give you an indication if the printer is operating properly and if
the driver has been installed properly. There are a number of different ways to print a printer self-test
page, but the two most common are through Properties of the Printer Settings in the Windows operating
system; and through operator panel on printer. If a printer self-test page prints out in printer code, or if
several blank pages are printed, this can be an incorrect print driver or an unsecured or loose printer
Power Outage:
Causes jobs to stall in the queue sometimes.
Must delete the stalled job(s)and resend.
Sending too many print jobs to the printer at once:
Sometimes the printer 'jams' electronically and the queue will have to be cleared by deleting the jobs. Sometimes a restart works.
Use Printer Offline function:
'Use Printer Offline': jobs are held in the queue. When the 'Use Printer Offline' is turned off the printer starts printing again.
