What is Hamid's Journey? (3 points)

- His arrest and subsequent trial follows a protest outside the Iranian Embassy in Canberra.
In Canberra in 1992, Iranian refugees raided the Iranian embassy after hearing reports of an alleged atrocity committed in their country of origin. The event was blown up out of all proportion and the refugees were branded terrorists, placed under arrest and some were convicted. The torture and suffering they had experienced at the hands of the Iranian regime was not considered relevant to their case and our court system silenced them once again... How does this reflect the themes of this play?

- Highlights the ignorance/disregard that Australians have for people of other cultures. Refugees often have violent pasts and they are expected just to forget everything that has happened to them when they live in Australia.
Hamid and Jhila go to Canberra to protest peacefully and are caught up in the frenzy when Hamid recognises one of the embassy officials as the guard who tortured him in Iran. Footage of Hamid looking as if he is about to attack the official is used to prosecute him in court... How is this shown on stage? How does it reflect the themes of the play?

-It is show onstage by an actor who is carrying a hand-held light to symbolise a camera. What is captured is what is shown by the media.

-It shows how the Media only shows people what it wants to and by doing so can influence an audience to believe that Hamid's attack was racially motivated and portrays him as a terrorist.

- Through the use of flashbacks the audience is shown the horrible torture Hamid endured under the Iranian regime in Tehran, which leads to audience to be sympathetic towards their journey and question why the Australian Government treats refugees in this way.
