Altitude of the Sun
When the sun 1st rises in the east, it will be at a very low altitude. As the day progresses, the sun will climb higher in the sky and its altitude will increase. The sun will reach its greatest altitude for the day at about 12 noon (1 p.m. if we are on daylight savings time) and then
begin to descend toward the west. As it descends, its altitude will gradually decrease until it sets in the west.
The seasons and the angle of the earth
During the spring and the summer, the sun strikes the earth at a 90 degree angle somewhere north of the equator which is closer to us. This results in the sun appearing higher in our sky, more intense heat and warmer temperatures. During fall and winter, the sun strikes the earth at a 90 degree angle somewhere south of the equator. This is farther from us so the sun appears lower in our sky, and we'll receive less intense heat and experience colder temperatures.
