8.01 Institutional Approval
When institutional approval is required, psycholgists provide accurate info about research proposals and obtain approval before conducting research. Conduct research according to the approved protocol.
8.02 Informed Consent to Research
a) Inform participants about
1) purpose of research, duration, procedures
2) right to decline and to withdaw participation
3) forseeable consequences of decclining or withdrawing
4) risks
5) benefits
6) limits of confidentiality
7) incentives
8) whom to contact w/ questions
b) If conducting intervention research, clarify to participants at the outset
1) experimental nature of the tx
2) services that will / will not be available to contrl group
3) means of assigning to groups
4) tx alternatives if S declines or withdraws participation
5) compensation for or cost of participation
8.03 Informed Consent for Recording Voices and Images in Research
Obtain consent unless
1) research consists of naturalistic observation in public places and person cannot be identified or harmed OR
2) research design includes deception and consent for use of recording is obtained during debriefing.
8.04 Client/Patient, Student, and Subordinate Research Participants
a) Take steps to protect prospective participants from adverse consequences of declining or withdrawing from participation.
b) If participation is a course requirement, or an opportunity for extra credit, prospective participant is given option of equitable alternative activities.
8.05 Dispensing with Informed Consent for Research
Only where
1) research would not reasonably be assumed to create distress or harm and involves
a) study of normal educational practices, curricula, or classroom management methods conducted in educational settings
b) only anonymous questionnaires, naturalistic observations or archival research that does not place participant at risk and confidentiality is protected
c) study of factors related to job or organizational effectiveness conducted in organizational settings for which there is no risk and confidentiality is protected
OR
2) otherwise permitted by law or federal or institutional regulations.
8.06 Offering Inducements for Research Participation
a) avoid offering excessive or inappropriate financial or other inducements for research participation. They can be coercive.
b) when offering professional services in exchange for research participation, clarify the nature of the services as well as the risks, obligations, and limitations
8.07 Deception in Research
a) Do not conduct research involving deception unless
*use of deception is justified by the study's prospective value AND
*effective nondeceptive procedures are not feasible
b) Do not conduct research involving deception if participation is expected to cause physical pain or severe emotional distress.
c) Explain any deception ASAF and allow participant to withdraw their data.
8.08 Debriefing
a) Provide participants prompt, appropriate info about the nature, results, conclusions of the study and take steps to correct any misconceptions.
b) If good reason to delay/withhold this info, take steps to minimize risk of harm.
c) When researcher becomes aware that research procedures caused harm, take steps to minimize harm
8.09 Humane Care and Use of Animals in Research
a) follow laws and regulations re: animal care
b) psychologist w/ proper training supervises care
c) Psychologist ensures that supervisees are well trained in research methods and animal care of relevant species
d) minimize animal discomfort
e) cause harm only when justified and alternative unavailable
f) use anesthesia for surgery and avoid infection
g) if nec to kill animal, kill rapidly & w/ minimal pain
8.10 Reporting Research Results
a) Do not fabricate data.
b) if significant errors discovered in own published data, take reasonable steps to correct
8.11 Plagiarism
Do not present portions of another's work as your own, even if other work is cited occasionally.
8.12 Publication Credit
a) Psychologists take responsibility and credit only for work they have performed or to which they have substantially contributed.
b) Principal authorship accurately reflects the relative scientific contributions of the individuals involved. Institutional position does not justify authorship credit. Minor contributions are acknowledged in footnotes or into.
c) Typically student is principal author on article substantially based on student's dissertation. Advisors discuss publication credit with students ASAF.
8.13 Dublicate Publication of Data
Do not publish previously published data w/o proper acknowledgement.
8.14 Sharing Research Data for Verification
a) Make data available to competent professional who seek to verify claims through reanalysis. Can require other professional to cover costs of data transfer.
b) If requesting data to verify claims through reanalysis, only use data for this purpose. Must get written permission for further analyses.
8.15 Reviewers
If reviewing material submitted for publication, grant, etc, respect the confidentiality of and proprietary rights of those who submitted the material.
