ANC

The ANC (African National Congress) is South Africa's democratic party. It was made to increase the rights of blacks. It also helped South Africa end apartheid.

F. W. deKlerk is a South African politician who was the president from 1989-1994. He was the one who freed Nelson Mandela.

Ethnic Group

An Ethnic Group is a category of people who share the same culture and ancestry. Ethnic Groups can vary from very large (1.8 mil+) to very small (a couple dozen). Most ethnic groups have the same race.

Famine is an extreme shortage of food. It can vary how famine is caused, like crop failure, government, or disaster. Many pieces, like Africa, still have famine.

Mohandas Gandhi was a famous civil rights activist, and he was the leader of the Indian Independence Movement. His most famous nonviolent act was the Salt March.

Hinduism is a polythiestic religion, and it is very popular in Asia, most notably India. They have things like a caste system, karma and reincarnation.

Islam is a monotheistic religion, and it's one of the most popular religions in the world. They believe in Allah, who is God.

Judiasm is a religion/ethnic group that is based off of Christianity. They are a religious group that believes in the old testament, but they are an ethnic group because they have their own language and country.

Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Desert is a desert in South Africa. The actual desert is inside the Kalahari Basin, which surrounds it. It has more plants and animals than an actual desert, therefore making it a semi-desert.

Lake Victoria is a lake in eastern Africa. It's the largest tropical lake in the world. It's more than 68,000 kilometers wide!

Nelson Mandela was the first president of South Africa. He is most famous for being a political activist and for being locked up for 27 years.

A Natural Resource is a resource that is made from the earth. There are 2 types of natural resources: renewable and nonrenewable. A nonrenewable resource cannot be brought back; a renewable resource can be brought back.

OPEC is the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Most of the countries in the organization are in the Middle East. It's purpose is to unify the costs of oil.

Pearl Harbor is a historic site in Hawaii. It was attacked in 1941 and it was the cause of the US getting into World War II.

Quota is the amount of goods that a country can have. It is a type of trade barrier. Quotas can be daily, monthly, or even yearly.

The [Democratic] Republic of the Congo is a country in the middle of Africa. It is a very unstable country with civil wars, famine, and disease. It is also a very corrupt country.

The Sahara Desert is the world's largest hot desert. It is a natural trade barrier, and it is over 3,600,000 miles wide.
