conscience
The ability we have to judge right from wrong according to what we have learned from faith and reason. For a person to have a good one, he must study the Bible and the teachings of the Church and put them into practice.
mortal sin
A serious offense against the law of God, which destroys the life of grace in our souls. For a sin to be mortal three conditions must be present: 1) the action must be seriously wrong, 2) we must know that it is seriously wrong, and 3) and we must do it freely, that is, without anyone or anything forcing us to do it. Even one mortal sin can bring us to hell. Thus it is important to confess such sins as soon as possible and to avoid whatever leads us to commit these sins.
occasion of sin
Any person, place, or thing that can lead us to disobey the holy law of God. An occasion of sin may be different for each person. We can know what persons, places, or things lead us to sin by examining our consciences daily.
sin
A deliberate offense against God's holy law in one's thoughts, words, actions, or lack of action. Sin can be either mortal or venial. Mortal sins destroy the life of God within us and must be privately confessed to an ordained priest. Venial sins can also be forgiven by other devotional acts, for example, receiving Communion or an Act of Contrition.
temptation
The urge to commit sin. We are tempted in three ways: by the world (anti-Christian values in society), the flesh (our selfish desires), and the devil (Satan and his band of evil angels). Temptations are not sins; we can either conquer them or give in to them. Only be giving in do we commit sin.
venial sin
An offense against the holy law of God in a small matter. Venial sins weaken our relationship with God and are dangerous to our spiritual well-being.
What is sin?
Sin is an offense done to God by disobeying His law.
What is mortal sin?
Mortal sin is an act of disobedience to the law of God in a serious matter, done with full knowledge and deliberate consent.
What are the effects of mortal sin?
Mortal sin destroys grace and charity in the soul and turns us away from God and Heaven.
What is venial sin?
Venial sin is an act of disobedience to the law of God in a lesser matter, or in a matter in itself serious, but done without full knowledge or consent.
Why is a sin that is less serious called "venial?"
A less serious sin is called "venial" that is, forgivable, because it does not take grace away and because it can be forgiven by repentance and good works, even without sacramental confession.
What is an occasion of sin?
An occasion of sin is any person, circumstance, or thing that puts us in danger of sinning.
Are we obliged to avoid the occasions of sin?
Yes, we are obliged to avoid the occasions of sin because we are obliged to avoid sin itself.
