Articles of Confederation

1.) This was the US's first constitution. It allowed the states to keep most of their power. It was considered to be a firm league of friendship

2.) Although the government didn't have much power over the states, they could conduct foreign affairs, maintain armed forces, borrow money, and issue currency. But, they could not force citizens to join the military, issue taxes, or regulate trade. In order to change these laws, all 13 colonies had to agree.

Depression Definition

1.) The US was going through a _______ because they lost all their money due to the war and to the taxes they had to pay to GB. Southern Plantations were damaged + trade decreased

Shay's Rebellion

1.) Daniel Shays was the leader of this rebellious group of farmers.

2.) They were rebelling because if they didn't have money to pay their taxes, then they lost their land and were thrown into prison. They were scared that the government was going to turn out like GB.

3.) The uprising was the worst in Masachussetts, they were trying to shut down courts so they couldn't take away their land anymore. The uprising ended by the militia killing four rebels.

Virginia Plan

1.) Edmund Randolph created this plan.

2.) Based off of James Madison's work, this plan called for a two-house legislature, a chief executive chosen by the legislature, and a court system.

3.) The problem that many smaller states had with this plan is that the number of delegates they had would be based on population size.

New Jersey Plan

1.) This plan was written by William Paterson. It was almost the same as Edmund Randolph's plan, but slightly different.

2.) He kept the one house legislature, with one vote for each state. But, Congress could set taxes and regulate trade.

Constitutional Convention

1.) This was called together to amend the Article of Confederation. After Shay's Rebellion, the government realized they were too weak and needed to be fixed. At first, George W. didn't agree with changing the AOC but after he heard about the rebellion he changed his mind.

2.) Lawyers, farmers, merchants, planters, physicians, generals, governors, and a college president all attended the meeting. In order to change the AOC, 7 of the13 colonies had to agree.

Amend

1.) To make minor changes or adjustments to a text or to make it more up-to-date.

2.) The delegates had to make amendments on the Articles of Confederation.

Three-Fifths Compromise

1.) This has to do with slavery. When the new acts were created, there were questions about slaves and of they would count as a person or not. They decided to count them as 3/5 a person.

2.) The south wanted to count them as a whole person so they could get more delegates, but the North didn't want to since they were considered property.

Great Compromise

1.) This is what everyone agreed on, a two-house legislature. In the lower house (House of Representatives) the number of seats would vary on the population. And in the upper (Senate) each state would have exactly two.

2.) I think this is a fair compromise because it mixes all the ideas together to form one.
