Securing equipment

Two main types of switches and two things to watch out for with each

Main Track hand operated

- normal position is lined for main track

- only left in reverse when gbo says so, attended by employee, occupied by equipment, in ocs, in ctc controlled block

- do not restore a switch to normal until fouling point is cleared.

NMT hand operated switches

- must be lined and locked normal

- nmt xovers: pg 40.

Four keys for derails

1- marked by signs

2- must stop 25 ft short

3- must be left in derailing position

4- must be returned to derail as soon as equipment has cleared it.

5- Special details indicated in time tables or special instructions and signage.

A movement using NMT must use what speed?

Reduced speed. Must not exceed 15mph. Must also on non signalled be prepared for one half range of vision

4 big DO's for securing equipment

1- At least two physical securements must be used...with one typically being handbrake according to chart k

2- Effectiveness tests must be used when being left.

3- Air brakes are max 2 hours.

4- handbrake must be applied on all locomotives.

Coupling - Before (2), during (2), after (1)

Before (1) Equipment is secured (2) all persons notified

During (1) Couple must be stretched by loco or track unit (2) a stop must be made 6-12 ft short to prevent shoving equipment.

After (1) check for applied hand brakes

FOULING- You must (3) and one exception

- Have protection

- have lined all switches

- keep switches lined for standing equipment

EXCEPTION - A movement can foul a track if it is NMT, known to be clear, and switch is lined

Keys to shoving equipment

(1) Crew on lead or on ground in position (or if track is known to be clear)

(2) When not protected it must have authority, not have move be longer than equipment, and not exceed 15mph.

Known to be clear
