What are the main parts of a plant?
-leaves
-roots -stems |
transpiration
the loss of water in plants through its leaves
What is the main job of each plant part?
leaves-make food through photosynthesis
roots-act like anchors, suck up H2O stems-support the plant |
photosynthesis
the process which plants make food using water, nutrients from the soil, and carbon dioxide and sunlight
chlorophyll
the organelle in the plant that allows it to absorb light, energy and photosynthesis. It makes a plant GREEN.
What is the purpose of chlorophyll?
-enables a plant to absorb light energy so that it can produce food.
-makes a plant GREEN |
What are chloroplasts?
small chlorophyll containing bodies and plant cells
Why do some plants change color in the fall?
the leaves start making chlorophyll so other pigments in the leaves become visible
List steps of photosynthesis:
1-sunlight
What does a plant need for photosynthesis?
-light
-water -chlorophyll -carbon dioxide |
producers
a living thing, such as a plant, that makes it own food
consumer
an animal that eats plants, other animals, or both
ecosystem
a community of organisms and the environment which they live
How do living things interact with one another in an ecosystem?
they may eat one another, compete for space, or share homes
herbivore
an animal that eats ONLY producers, also called, first level consumers
carnivore
an animal that eats other animals, also called second level consumers
omnivore
an animal that eats plants and other animals
food chain
the transfer of food, energy between organisms in an ecosystem
decomposer
a consumer that obtains food, energy by breaking down remainders of dead plants and animals
What can happen next to food energy taken in by a second-level consumer?
it can be transferred to a third level consumer, or be broken down by a decomposer
food web
a diagram that shows the relationship between different food chains in an ecosystem
If all the mosquitoes in a pond died, what might happen next?
the carnivore that feeds on mosquitoes would starve or eat more of another kind of food. Either way it would mess up the food web.
energy pyramid
a diagram that shows how much food energy is passed from each level in a food chain to the next
what can happen to a food chain if the number of second level consumers increases?
the second level consumers may eat more of the first level consumers, wiping them out. Eventually the second level consumers starve because there are not enough first level consumers for them to eat.
What non-living materials are important to living things?
-water
-nitrogen -carbon -oxygen |
What part do decomposers play in the nitrogen cycle?
decomposers release nitrogen back into the soil
