What was the Trail of Tears?
It was the path that that the Cherokee Indians took when they were forced out of Florida to Oklahoma.
How did Americans' desire for more land affect the Native Americans and what was the Indian Removal act.
Most Indians had moved west of the Mississippi, but some didn't.In 1830 they made the Indian removal act which moved all Indians to a territory in Oklahoma set aside for them. Some resisted, but they found it a loosing streak.
What were the five civilized tribes,what did they do, and what was the Trail of Tears?
The Five Civilized tribes tried to resist in a different way. They were the Choctaws, the Creeks, the Cherokees, the Chickasaws, and the Seminoles. They adopted the white settler's ways. They invented a written language, farmed like the whites, invented a daily newspaper, etc. The whites made the tribes move anyways. Many died of disease, hunger, and cold. 15,000 started and 11,000 reached their destination. It was called the Trail of Tears
Who were the Seminoles, and what did they do?
The Seminoles were one of the 5 civilized tribes. When they were wanted for slaves and to be sent to Oregon, they fled to Florida. Soon, America got Florida from Spain, and they were forced to move. They won several battles against the American's, but then their chief was tricked into capture and died.
Why did Americans believe it was acceptable to take over more and more land?
The Americans thought they needed more land to farm on since 9/10 Americans were farmers. They also believed in manifest destiny, or to expand to the Pacific ocean.
What did Great Britain and Mexico think of America's concept of Manifest Destiny?
They were angry and surprised. They thought you didn't need that much land and tried to prevent the US from taking British and Mexican land.
Why is the Alamo today remembered as a great battle?
Because the Texans had rebelled against the Spanish government on Spanish land and fought for 12 days without giving up. They showed heroism and persistence by doing this.
What were Sam Houston's main strategies for defeating the Mexican army?
He trained his small army when avoiding battle. When the Mexicans were resting, he used the element of surprise and attacked them.
What was the main reason Texas had to wait to become a state?
the USA was trying to balance the number of free and slave states, and the slave state of Texas would mess the balance up.

the Oregon country had beautiful hills and valleys, and they also had farmland, and hunting land which the people wanted.

They compromised even though it looked like there would be a war. South of 49 degrees latitude was the US, and north was GB.
Who were the mountain men?
they were the ones who made fur trade possible--they lived in the mountains and were fur trappers. Some were adventurers, some were criminals, and some were educated (some not). They came down from the mountains each year to trade fur for gunpowder, bullets, sugar, & whiskey.

What was the main reason President Polk declared war against Mexico?
because Polk wanted California and New Mexico, and Mexico wouldn't sell them. He wanted California for the trade routes to the East. He wanted NM for Santa Fe, a large trade center. Mexico and the US were also arguing over an area of land. Mexico declared it within their boundaries, and America disagreed.
Why did some people oppose President Polk?
People felt it was wrong when Polk said "the Mexicans shed American blood on American soil". Both countries had claimed that area and so it wasn't American soil. Also, the President had put his troops on the land which obviously set the Mexicans to try to defeat the troops.
How did Henry Thoreau demonstrate civil disobedience?
He refused to pay his taxes and ended up in jail for a night.

Arizona, CA, NM, Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado.
What was the Bear Flag revolt?
In a 3-day battle, America captured Monterrey Mexico, and then they also captured Santa Fe and then marched on to California. They found that in Northern CA the people had already overthrown Mexican rule. The Northern Californians made a flag with a bear on it, and thus it was called the Bear Flag revolt.

Why did the Mormons move to the far west?
The Mormons were persecuted for their religion. They were called the members of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They were forced to leave NY, their home, and later many other states such as Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. They were persecuted because people didn't like their beliefs, they converted others, and they were friendly with the natives. In Illinois their leader was killed by a mob and their new leader Brigham Young led them to the Great Salt Lake. Nobody lived or farmed there because of the salty lake and the dry land. They built irrigation canals and felt safe because it was part of Mexico. Eventually their population went up to 15,000.
Why did the gold rush attract so many people to California?
because they thought they could earn money mining for gold, or they could earn money selling to the miners.
What effect did the gold rush have on settlements in the far west?
It expanded the settlements. Everybody was rushing to get the gold. Only early people got gold, but many people decided to settle down because CA was so beautiful and they could make a living selling supplies.
