Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrustedby Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the endof time




It includes three degrees or grades:bishop, priest, and deacon.

Apostolic succession refers to the spiritual gifts and responsibilities bishops receive, through which Jesus personally leads the Church, which have been passed down the generations over the past two thousand years.

The deacon’s role is particularly concerned with works of charity.




Deacons are called to serve the Church through a ministry of liturgy, word and charity. They do this by assisting priests with their responsibility of teaching, sanctifying and governing the Church.

What does the word 'deacon' mean?

‘Deacon’ comes from the Greekword diakonia meaning ‘service’.

What are the two types of deacon?

Transitional deacons - those who are later going to be ordained into the priesthood.




Permanent deacons - those permanently ordained to this ministry for life.

How can the call to ordained ministry be discerned?

The Holy Spirit stirs thoughts and feelings that point to acall for some to become a priest or deacon.




The call to ordained ministry is discerned by recognising the Spirits actions by:


- praying daily


- receiving Holy Communion


- drawing on the gifts in the Sacrament of Confirmation


- Growing in understanding of the teachings of Jesus

Priests serve a community or group within the Church and make available spiritual gifts to the communities they serve. What do their tasks include?

Teach the Gospel: during homilies, or preparing couples for marriage


‘Sanctify’ believers (through the sacraments) so that, as they grow in holiness, and can draw closer to God.


Guide the community: through acts of ‘service’. e.g. calling community members to help with the works of the parish, encouraging community members to provide for the poor.

Why is celibate love animportant aspect of ministerial priesthood?

Those called to the priesthood are called by Jesus to be available to respond to the needsof all people at all times. They do this by living a life of celibate love.

How do priests develop the gift of celibate love?

Celibate love - priest is to serve God as a single person.




To develop the gift of celibate love priests:


Needs to centre their life upon Jesus.


• Serve - exercise this love within the community.

How can ministerial priesthoodbe a fulfilling lifestyle choice?

They find fulfilment and other spiritualrewards by performing the works that these vocations involve:


- Being with others


- Celebrating the Eucharist


- Preaching the gospel
