Code requirements specific to spiral stairs

- min. unit run inside stringer 150+

- avg. Unit run at centerline at least 200mm

- if closed risers are used, must be vertical

Why must a secon layout point be established for curved stairs?

Since the nosing must be equal, a parallel line must be drawn to mark back of tread. The back edge radiates from the second layout point.

What are the main differences between circular and spiral stairs?

- spiral stairs converge to a center point

- spiral stairs are required to have a min. tread width of 150 rather than min. unit run of 150.

Why are spiral stairs not allowed as the only means of egress?

Because of the steepness.
