CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
He believed he could find Asia by sailing west from Europe across the Atlantic Ocean. He believed he would discover a route to trade for silks, spices and gold in Asia.
GIOVANNI DA VERRAZANO
He reached the Atlantic coast of what is now South Carolina. Then, he began to go north. In April of 1524, Verrazano sailed into New York Bay.
SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN
In 1603, another French explorer, followed Cartier's route. He began to set up the fur trade for France. Five years later, he built a permanent settlement along the St. Lawrence River. He called it Quebec.
HENRY HUDSON
He was an English sea captain who worked for a Dutch trading company. He set sail from the Netherlands in his small ship, the Half Moon. In September 1609, he sailed into New York Bay. He sailed up the river and they met many Native Americans. Hudson and his crew traded beads, knives, and hatchets with the Native Americans for food and furs.
