What is labor dystocia?
• Defined as prolonged, difficult, or abnormal labor & birth.
What is dystocia caused by?
Dysfunctional labor (Powers - dysfunctional contraction patterns)
2. Problems with pelvic structure (Passage - abnormal diameters in inlet, midplane, or outlet)

When is dystocia suspected?
➢ alteration in the frequency, duration, intensity of contractions or uterine resting tone that is expected for the patient's stage of labor
➢ lack of progressive cervical dilation during active phase of labor when patient is having adequate contractions
➢ lack of progressive fetal descent during the active stage of labor when patient is having adequate contractions
