Define 'risk factor'.
Something that can increases the chance of getting a disease.
What is the cause of an infectious disease?
They are caused by infection with pathogens e.g. bacteria and viruses.
What is the cause of a non-infectious disease?
They can be caused by the body's malfunctioning (e.g. cancer, heart disease, genetic disorders and diabetes) or they can be caused by lifestyle or environment (e.g. malnutrition).
Describe a specific risk factor of cancer.
Smoking - the main cause of mouth, throat and lung cancer.

Excessive exposure to sunlight (e.g. using sunbeds and sunbathing with sunscreen) - a cause of skin cancer.

Excessive alcohol intake - increases the risk of numerous cancers including liver cancer.
Describe a specific risk factor of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD).
Poor diet - a diet high in saturated fat and/or salt increases the risk.

Smoking, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol intake - these can all lead to high blood pressure.
How can you reduce risk factors?
By making changes for the better in lifestyle (e.g. reducing alcohol intake, eating healthier) reduces the risks but does not total rule out the possibility of contracting the disease.
