What does SOHO mean?

Small office home office

What is a SOHO device?

Typically, SOHO devices anf printers save on cost and space by combining multiple functions into a single device.

Why is it important to make sure the proper drivers are loaded onto SOHO devices?

This process will help the user get the most out of the device. If not, the full functionality of the device might be available.

If I install a driver for a SOHO device, what should I ensure about the driver that guarantees full functionlity with my OS?

Ensure the driver is for the proper system. Install 32-bit or 64-bit accordingly. Make sure to install Mac drivers on MacOS and Win drivers on WinOS. Maker sure the OS version is compatible with the driver you are installing.

What is duplex mode?

Causes the printer to print on both sides.

What does collate mean?

collate or collation settings determine the order in which pages are printed. If set to collate, the printer will print the complete document before printing the next copy.

What are the two options for print orientation?

Portrait or landscape

What is portrait printing?

Portrait mode means the top of the page is the shorter dimension. This is, typically, how pages are printed, especially documents.

What is landsape?

The top of the page is the longer dimension. This is, usually, reserved for spreadsheets and slides.

What do print quality setting do?

quality settings control resolution and color.

What is resolution?

Expressed in dpi (dots per inch), Higher resolutions provide better quality printouts.

What is color settings?

color settings control how vivid the color output is.

What is device sharing?

A feature that allows devices to be shared by multiple users over wired or wireless connections.

How can users acces devices that are shareable?

Users can connect directly to printer of through a print server or cloud printing server.

How can one connect to a wired print device?

USB, serial or Ethernet

What is the most common way to connect to a printer to a computer?

USB. Once connected the printer can be configured as "shareable"

What is a serial connection?

Older method of connecting printers with a serial cable. DB-9 or DB-25 connectors were used. It is unlikely that you would see this kind of connection today.

Explain the connection to ethernet and printers.

Printers that are desinged to work on a network will have an RJ-45 Ethernet connector. They connect to the nework through Ethernet, just as a computer would and are easily shared, since they are directly connected to the network.

What are the options for a connecting a printer wirelessly?

Bluetooth, 802.11 or a direct ad hoc connection.

What is a Bluetooth wireless connection to a printer?

Any Blutooth connection to a printer will allow a computer to print from devices within 10 meters (about 30 feet). Mobile devices can use Bluetooth to send documents directly to a printer.

Besides Bluetooth, what is another method of connecting to print devices wirelessly?

802.11 (a, b, c, g, n, ac) wireless protocol (WiFi). This will allow any computer on the network to access the printer or 1 computer to access the device directly.

What is the difference between infrastructure and ad hoc mode?

When the device and the printer are both connected to the WiFi network to communicate, this is infrastructure.

When the device connects directly to the printer over 802.11, this is called ad hoc mode.

What is an integrated print server?

A device that can be integrated into the printer or separate, but allows the device to sit on the network and handles print requests from users.

What are some of the features of a print server?

Print servers can spool (temporarily store) requests for printers that are busy, allow prioritization of print jobs and delete jobs after they've been sent.

What is Cloud Printing/Remote Printing?

A service that allows you to print from anywhere you have internet access to a printer that has been configured for use with that service.

Are all printers compatible with all cloud printing?

No. It is important to check the printers compatibility if this is a needed feature.

What is a Public/Shared Device?

A SOHO device that is made available to connect with anyone on the network. This is true for devices that are connected directly to a computer or directly to the network.

What is a necessary step to share a device publicly, on a network, when it is directly connected to a computer?

The operating system of the computer must be configured to allow the device to be shared publicly.

What is a concern to consider when giving access to a users over a network?

Data privacy is a major concern so steps must be taken to ensure that users cannot read other users' print jobs.

What means to configure printers does Windows use to allow sharing local/networked devices?

Control Panel is where Windows users may configure a printer's status to be shareable.

How can users access a printer, in Windows, once it is shareable?

Over TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol) by identifying the IP address of the computer and the TCP/UDP ports.

What are the ports used for network printing?

TCP 139, TCP 445, UDP 137 and UDP 138.

What is the method of sharing printers that Apple uses?

Bonjour protocol allows any Apple device to discover printers via Bonjour.

Can a Windows user access a device connected through Apple's Bonjour protocol?

Yes, but it would have to download iTunes to access this Bonjour configured printers.

How do Apple mobile devices running iOS access shared printers?

AirPrint is used by Apple mobile devices running iOS to print to shared printers over WiFi.

How does a user ensure data privacy when using shared printers?

The user must manage user authentication and hard drive caching of print jobs (AKA spooling).

What is user authentication?

When a user is required to authenticate to print servers.

What are the two levels of print server user authentication?

user or administrator

What is the difference between authenticating as a user or administrator on a print server?

Users are limited to printing and managing their own print jobs.

Administrators can manage all print jobs.

What is the purpose of users authenticating as users on a print server?

This prevents other users from seeing or interfering with other users' print jobs.

What is hard drive caching?

Hard drive caching of print jobs is also called spooling. It allows print jobs to be stored on a hard drive or other storage device until the printer is ready to print.

What should happen to the print files that have been hard drive cached once the print job is complete?

They should be automatically deleted.

If sensitive print files are spooled and then printed but failed to automatically delete, what should be done?

The file can be manually deleted by an administrator.
