Explain the term ‘alloy’and give examples of two ferrous and two non ferrous alloys?

Analloy is a metal made up of two or more other metals.

Stainlesssteel and high tensile steel are ferrous alloys.

Duraluminand brass are non-ferrous alloys.

*** There are not manycommon alloys so it is good to be aware of a few. The term aluminium alloy isused a great deal. Sports car wheels are often called alloy wheels. They are infact duralumin, an aluminium alloy that is light and strong.

Give one example of howthe following metals might be used and state which of the material’scharacteristics makes it particularly appropriate for the application that youhave given.

(1) Cast iron

(2) Aluminium

(3) Copper

(4) Brass

(1) Cast iron – workshopvices – strong and has the ability to be cast easily.

(2) Aluminium – cookingutensils – good conductor of heat.

(3) Copper – water pipes –malleability

(4) Brass – water taps –corrosion resistant.

*** There is a range ofanswers to this question but when a question of this nature arises go straightto the point and do not offer other information that is not asked for. In theexample of cast iron there are two properties given. No extra marks will beavailable for the second and you could get one of them wrong.

Explain how the processof normalising differs from the process of annealing?

Normalisingis a process that is only applicable to steel. Normalising results in toughersteel than annealing. Within the process of normalising the temperature iscontrolled according to the upper critical limit of the particular steel whereannealing raises the temperature to cherry red heat.

***Without the lastsentence this answer would not have a clear enough focus on the question. Thequestion asks for the difference in the process. Reference could have been madeto either carbon content or upper critical limit.

List the stages necessaryto prepare a mild steel lever for plastic dip coating?

Thesurface should be finished by filing, draw filing and then using an emery clothto remove all scratches. It should then be cleaned and all grease removed usinga spirit such as white spirit.

Thisanswer is correct although it does not really matter if the actual area to becoated is free from scratches. The important point is to be free from grease.
