PARRALLELISM
Two or more parallel ideas expressed in parallel grammatical form (single words w/single words; phrases w/phrases etc.)
SERIES
balance items in a series
ex: withdrawal, restlessness,depression
(not....they are depressed)
PAIR
use:
coordinating conjunctions (and,but,or)
correlative conjunctions(either/or..)
word introducing comparison (than/as)
FUNCTION WORDS
words that signal the grammatical nature of the word groups to follow (by,to) (that,because)
MISSING WORDS
If leaving out a word defies grammar, put it back in. (Davis never has and never will accept a bribe)..has..accept is not grammatically correct.
MODIFIERS
Modifiers, whether they are single words, phrases or clauses, should point clearly to the words they modify. (related words should be kept together.)
LIMITING MODIFIERS
(only,even,almost,nearly,just) should appear in front of a verb only if they modify the verb.
PHRASES AND CLAUSES
make sure the meaning is clear in the placement of phrases and clauses.
SENTENCE FLOW
A sentence should flow from subject to verb to object without lengthy detours.
ADVERB PLACEMENT
Do not put an adverb between a verb and its object.
SPLIT INFINITIVE
When a modifier appears between the two parts of an infinitive. (to ..carefully...balance, to...completely...understand.)
DANGLING MODIFIER
word groups (ex: verbal phrases) that suggest but do not name an actor. Correct by:
-naming the actor in the subject of the sentence
-name the actor in the modifier
POINT OF VIEW
The perspective from which a piece of writing is written:
First Person (I,We)
Second Person (You)
Third Person (He,/She/It/One or They)
VERB MOOD
INDICATIVE used for facts,opinions and questions
IMPERATIVE used for orders or advice
SUBJUNCTIVE used for wishes or conditions contrary to facts
