Gingko Biloba
*Improve memory, thinking. Some use for Alzheimers Disease, senility

*May help with SSRI induced erectile dysfunction

*Works by vasodilating arteries, improve blood flow to brain, antioxidant effect, Suppresses antiplatelet activation.

*Does work. Can also improve peripheral blood flow in diabetics and hearing loss due to reduced blood flow.

*Gi upset. Interacts with antiplatelet and anticoagulants.
Goldenseal
*Used as antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoa. Used in some eywashes

* Works. Can be as effective as Flagyl in patients with Giardia

*Overdoses cause GI upset, diarrhea, and CNS stimulation

*Toxic doses: HTN, seizures, resp failure
Kawa (Kava)
*Used to treat anxiety, promote sleep, relax muscles

*Can work to relax muscles without mental clouding

*Must be taken for several weeks before anti-anxiety effects develop

*High doses cause intoxication (like ETOH), may cause rash, liver damage/failure

*Potentiates other CNS depressants
St. John’s Wart
*Treats mild to moderate depression

*Huge interactions!

*Increases breakdown of cyclosporine, warfarin, HIV drugs

*Increases excretion of digoxin, steroids, calcium channel blockers

*Increases risk of serotonin syndrome with SSRI’s, cocaine, amphetamines, MAOI’s and TCA’s
Saw Palmetto
*Used for BPH. Research conflicting on effectiveness.

*May mask elevated PSA and prostate cancer.
Valerian
*Used as sleep aid and sedative. Effects build over several days.

*May cause daytime drowsiness.

*No known interactions.
