Will you be off or from?

From.

From what and to what?

From the degree of an Entered Apprentice to that of a Fellowcraft.

Are you a Fellowcraft?

I am; try me.

How will you be tried?

By the square.

Why by the square?

Because it is an emblem of morality and one of the working tools of my profession.

What is a square?

An angle of ninety degrees or the fourth part of a circle.

What made you a Fellowcraft?

My obligation.

Where were you made a Fellowcraft?

In a just and regularly constituted Lodge of Fellowcrafts.

How were you prepared?

By being divested of all metallic substance, neither naked nor clad, barefoot nor shod, hoodwinked, with a cable tow twice around my naked right arm, in which condition I was conducted to the door of a Lodge by a Brother.

Why had you the cable tow twice around your naked right arm?

To signify that as a Fellowcraft I was about to become under a double tie to the Fraternity.

How gained you admission?

By three distinct knocks.

To what do they allude?

To the three precious jewels of a Fellowcraft, which are the attentive ear, the instructive tongue, and the faithful breast.

What was said to you from within?

Who comes here?

Your answer?

I, AB, who has been regularly initiated an Entered Apprentice, served a proper time as such, and now seeks more light in Masonry by being passed to the degree of a Fellowcraft.

What were you then asked?

If it was of my own free will and accord that I made this request; if I was worthy and well qualified, duly and truly prepared; if I had made the suitable proficiency in the proceeding degree to entitle me to this; all of which being answered in the affirmative, I was asked by what further right or benefit I expected to gain admission.

Your answer?

By the benefit of the pass.

Did you give the pass?

I did not; my conductor gave it for me.

What followed?

I was directed to wait with patience until the Worshipful Master in the East could be informed of my request and his answer returned.

What answer did he return?

Let him enter this Lodge in the name of God and be received in due and ancient form.

How were you received?

Upon the angle of a square presented to my naked right breast, which was to teach me that the square of virtue should be the rule and guide of my conduct in my future transactions with all mankind, but more especially with my Brethren in Masonry.

How were you then disposed of?

I was conducted twice regularly about the Lodge, to the Junior Warden in the South, to the Senior Warden in the West, thence to the Worshipful Master in the East, at each of which stations the same questions were asked and like answers returned as at the door.

How did the Worshipful Master in the East then dispose of you?

He ordered me to be reconducted to the Senior Warden in the West, who taught me how to approach the East, advancing by two upright regular steps, my feet forming the angle of an oblong square, my body erect at the Altar, before the Worshipful Master in the East.

What did the Worshipful Master then make of you?

A Fellowcraft, in due form.

What was that due form?

Kneeling on my naked right knee, my left forming a square, my right hand resting upon the Holy Bible, square, and compasses, my left arm elevated, forming a square, in which due form I took the obligation of a Fellowcraft, which is as follows;

Obligation Pt 1

I, AB, of my own free will and accord, in the presence of Almighty God and this Worshipful Lodge, erected to Him and dedicated to the Holy Saints John, do hereby and hereon most solemnly and sincerely promise and swear, that I will always hele, ever conceal, and never reveal, any of the secret arts, parts, or points of the hidden mysteries of the Fellowcraft degree, to any person or persons whomsoever, except it be to a true and lawful Brother Fellowcraft, or within the body of a just and regularly constituted Lodge of such, and not unto him or them until, by strict trial, due examination, or lawful information, I shall have found him or them as lawfully entitled to the same as I am myself.

Obligation Pt 2

I furthermore promise and swear that I will stand to and abide by all the laws, rules, and regulations of the Fellowcraft degree, so far as the same shall come to my knowledge. Further, that I will answer and obey all due signs and summonses sent to me from a Lodge of Fellowcrafts, or given me by a Brother of this degree, if within the length of my cable tow. Further, that I will aid and assist all poor distressed Fellowcrafts, they making application to me as such, and I finding them worthy, so far as their necessities may require, and my ability permit, without material injury to myself. Further, that I will not cheat, wrong, or defraud a Lodge of Fellowcrafts, or a brother of this degree, knowingly, nor supplant him in any of his laudable undertakings.

Obligation Pt 3

All this, I most solemnly and sincerely promise and swear, with a firm and steadfast resolution to perform the same, without any hesitation, mental reservation, or secret evasion of mind, whatsoever, binding myself under no less penalty than that of having my breast torn open, my heart and vitals taken from there and placed upon the highest pinnacle of the temple, there to be devoured by the vultures of the air, should I ever in the least knowingly violate this, my Fellowcraft obligation, so help me God, and keep me steadfast in the due performance of the same.

After the obligation, what were you asked?

What I most desired.

Your answer?

More light in Masonry.

Did you receive it?

I did, by order of the Worshipful Master, with the assistance of the Brethren.

On being brought to light for the second time in Masonry, what did you discover more than you had seen before?

One point of the compasses elevated above the square, the other being hidden, which was to teach me that, as a Fellowcraft, I had received light in Masonry, but partially.

What did you next discover?

The Worshipful Master, approaching me from the East and under the due guard and sign of a Fellowcraft, who, in token of the continuance of his friendship and brotherly love, presented me his right hand, and with it, the pass, token of the pass, grip, and word of a Fellowcraft, and ordered me to arise, go and salute the Junior and Senior Wardens as such.

After saluting the Wardens, what did you next discover?

The Worshipful Master in the East, who ordered me to be reconducted to the Senior Warden in the West, who taught me how to wear my apron as a Fellowcraft.

How should a Fellowcraft wear his apron?

With the flap and right corner turned up.

After being taught how to wear your apron as a Fellowcraft, how were you disposed of?

I was reconducted to the Worshipful Master in the East, who presented me with the working tools of a Fellowcraft, which are the plumb, the square, and the level.

How were you then disposed of?

I was ordered to be reconducted to the place from whence I came, there reinvested with that of which I had been divested, and informed that on my return to the Lodge, it would be necessary that I should make a regular ascent up a flight of winding stairs, consisting of 3, 5, and 7 steps, to a place representing the middle chamber of King Solomon's temple, there to receive instruction relative to the wages and precious jewels of a Fellowcraft.

Where is a Lodge of Fellowcrafts held?

In a place representing the middle chamber of King Solomon's temple.

On your return to the Lodge, how were you disposed of?

I was admitted to the middle chamber, where I was received and recorded as a Fellowcraft, and obtained an explanation of my wages and precious jewels as such.

What are the wages of a Fellowcraft?

Corn, wine, and oil; the corn of nourishment, the wine of refreshment, and the oil of joy.

What are the precious jewels of a Fellowcraft?

The attentive ear, the instructive tongue, and the faithful breast; the attentive ear receives the sound from the instructive tongue and the secrets of Freemasonry are thereby safely lodged in the repository of faithful breasts.

Have you any signs appertaining to this degree?

I have.

Give me the first sign.

*Step and Due Guard*

What is that?

The due guard of a Fellowcraft.

To what does it allude?

To the position in which my hands were placed when I took my obligation.

Give me the next sign.

(Done)

What is that?

The sign of a Fellowcraft.

To what does it allude?

To the penalty of my obligation.

Give me a token.
