Before a session you should
1. plan ahead
2. research the child's condition and formulate a plan based on medical records, past sessions and goals you want to accomplish
3. set up the area- have equipment and supplies ready, be ready to take notes, make sure room lighting and temperature is appropriate, choose least distractive area and use appropriate size furniture and screens if necessary.
Things to remember DURING the session that will help decrease the opportunity for behavior problems to show up.
1. be ready to begin the session at the scheduled time
2. provide appropriate instructions
3. determine who will be in the session
4. use methods of instruction techniques
5. be flexible
6. remain in control
7. manage behaviors positively
8. keep unused equipment out of sight
9. maintain eye contact
10. if you make a mistake be able to move on.
11. move smoothly from one activity to another
12. cooperate with other therapists
13. use appropriate communication
14. give feedback to the client
15. relate how each task can be meaningful
16. take notes on objective and subjective behavior.
General Precautions
1. see to the safe arrival and departure of the client
2. never allow the child or dependent adult to be left alone in the clinic
3. watch for fatigue or medical emergency
4. follow precautions from physician or based on your knowledge of diagnosis
after the session
1. let the patient/family know how they did in the session.
2. give them an idea of what the next session will involve
3. clean up the area
4. make notes and plan for you next session
What are some of the principles of behavior management?
1. make child aware of clinic rules
2. be consistent
3. firmness is required
4. no punishment system without a reward system
5. no punishment to a child who cannot cognitively understand it
6. punishment level must be comparable to rule broken
7. have a plan in place in case child becomes uncontrollable.
How do you establish a positive therapy environment?
1.provide positive reinforcement
2. intermittent echoing of child's speech
3. therapist should clearly demonstrate that he/she is enjoying time with child
Reward
1. increases the behavior it follows
2. must be meaningful
3. may include a smile, pat on the back, and words that reinforce the positive action, brief hug, food, free play, token system
punishment
1. decreases the behavior it follows
2. may initally make the behavior worse
3. should only be used as part of a team approach with parents, psychologist, etc.
4. may include: ignoring, time out, over correcting, performance contracts
Characteristics of both reward and punishment
1. will be different for each client
2. will change with age change
3. will change as the client becomes accustomed to it
4. must be applied immediately to be effective
What to do if a child does not participate in task presented
1. encourage them to try
2. physically assist or guide them to participate
3. do the activity yourself to demonstrate how fun it is
4. offer a reward if the activity is completed
5. emphasize the efforts not necessarily their performance.
