What is the difference between functional mobility and mobility?
mobility is just looking at gait patterns (walking, etc) and used often by PT's
Functional mobility is looking at movement related to a functional task- reaching up to get an item, carrying out a task
Do all mobility aids increase the normal base of support of the client?
yes
The progression of functional mobility aids as the patient heals
crutches, walker, walker cane (hemi aid), quad cane, straight cane, no aid
What are the four basic determinants for the type of mobility aide the client may need?
1. step ability- hurt ankle to severly impaired gait
2. support of UE- can they grasp, etc
3. support of LE- can they bear weight
4. trunk balance- can they maintain midline
what are the guidelines for all mobility aids>
1. lean fully to gain the needed support
2. lean on it less as they progress in their ability (except in crutches in non-weight bearing fractures)
3. always move the aid with the weak leg
4. never allow the mobiltiy to advance too far or the client will lose balance
5. for walkers never let the patient get so close to the walker that their trunk touches the front bar or they will lose balance
What are general wheelchair mobility skills
1. to go forward- push evenly on both wheels
2. to go backward- push evenly on both wheels
3. to go the the right - push on the left wheel
4. to go to the left- push on the right wheel
what does srair climbing encourage?
1. weight shifting
2. foot placement
3. steppage
4. gaining LE strength
5. trunk balance while standing on one foot
What are the general rules of stair climbing?
1. one step at a time
2. use 6 inch steps if possible
3. need railings on both sides to go up one side and down other.
4. strong leg goes up first
What are some of the key factors with bed mobility?
1. it is one of the 1st things a patient will do
2. need to move to prevent ulcers and sores
3. go over precautions with client
4. if have any doubts get help
5. use hip and scapula
6. keep patient as close as possible
7. load and unload to allow patient to scoot better.
